BASEBALL: Recruiting class ranked No. 14

October 9, 2007

Baseball America has ranked the Rebels’ 2008 class of just-arrived freshmen and newcomers No. 14 in the nation. Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco will have to find a starting pitcher to replace Will Kline in the rotation, and freshman left-hander Drew Pomeranz is expected to be a candidate.

FOOTBALL: Hugh Freeze on the receivers

October 9, 2007

Here are some comments from wide receivers coach Hugh Freeze on the players at his position.

(On return of Dexter McCluster)

We’ve got to find ways to get him the ball. He plays at a fast pace all the time, and we’ve got to get him more involved.

(How has Dexter’s conditioning been?)

I don’t think any of that was an issue. The whole time he was hurt he was conditioning, It was just a matter of the doctor saying it was safe for him physically. I don’t know that he’s missing a beat in those areas.

(Does he have a fear of getting hurt again?)

He has not played with any fear or nerves. I didn’t notice any of that with him on blocking or running routes.

(Do you find yourself struggling to spread the ball around?)

Yes, that is an issue with receivers. They all want their share, their touches, and you have to manage them and make sure they all stay happy.

Think he (Mike Wallace) and several others have that mentality, and something might have to give from week to week.
