BASEBALL: Rebels slide five spots

April 21, 2008

Ole Miss is No. 21 in this week’s Baseball America Top 25. The Collegiate Baseball rankings will come out later today.

A few items to note …

The Rebels’ RPI ranking dropped from 30 to 46 over the last week. …

The Rebels lead the West by two games over Alabama with a 10-8 record. That 10-8 mark could have them as low as sixth overall if the season ended today, depending on how tie-breakers fall. …

Ole Miss has had two nine-game win streaks this season. Following the first, to open the season, the Rebels went 6-11. Following the second nine-game streak, which ended in an 8-2 loss to LSU, the Rebels are 1-4. Sound streaky? …

Freshman Drew Pomeranz has established himself as the most consistent pitcher on a staff with far more experience than he has. Pomeranz has won three straight SEC starts and has given up just two runs in his last 21 innings. Six times in the first six innings South Carolina put at least one runner in scoring position against Pomeranz, and he stranded them all.

Scott Bittle was solid in three relief innings, and he looks like he’s going to show up big at least once on the weekend.

FYI: Two questions for the blog

April 21, 2008

Ole Miss won the SEC men’s tennis tournament. That’s quite a significant achievement given the level of play within the conference.

Ole Miss has reached the NCAA tournament 16 times, the Final Four four times, the championship match once, the quarterfinals seven times and the Sweet 16 13 times.

Head coach Billy Chadwick is 447-208 and has coached 20 All-Americans. If his sport was basketball he’d be royalty in Oxford.

In short, Ole Miss is a tennis school. The question(s) is do you care? Have you been to a match or will you go to one?
