Let’s talk about the Rebels. Leave a thought or question below, and we’ll get a string going in the comments section. I’ll be on the blog until 12:30.

A couple of items of interest.
As the Rebels continue to get healthy along the DL — Ted Laurent and Peria Jerry are now back — all eyes focus on Greg Hardy, who has been out at practice jogging this week. He reports no pain in his surgically repaired foot. The return of Hardy will be a big lift. His conditioning will be a concern at first, but Hardy full speed for a few plays is better than no Hardy at all.
… When he gets back the pass rush will improve. I’m interested to see how Marshay Green does at corner and whether pass coverage will improve.

I have seen several “experts” predict that Ole Miss and Southern Miss will play in the Liberty Bowl. Yesterday, I heard that there was an agreement or contract that prohibited in-state rivals like these playing in bowl games. What’s the deal?
September 12, 2008 at 12:06 pm |
PA, do you really think the Samford passing game will present a challenge to the Ole Miss defense?
September 12, 2008 at 12:07 pm |
Marshay made a great play last week, in thev endzone before half time
September 12, 2008 at 12:07 pm |
It’s my understanding that the SEC’s agreement with the bowl prohibits that matchup. We were having that discussion at Ole Miss the other day. Who has predicted an Ole Miss-Southern Miss matchup?

Marshay did make a great play. Sometimes his inexperience may cause him to be out of position. He covered a lot of ground to make that play at the last second.

The last place that I saw it was ESPN.com

PA, did you think our blitz packages were readable last week?

I’ll check and confirm that.

Do you think that this Ole Miss team will do a typical Houston Nutt job and upset someone that they should not beat…on the road?
September 12, 2008 at 12:10 pm |
You know, I’ve seen some discussion on that below, but that didn’t strike me during the game. Probably, when you line up too soon at the line you tip your hand, but I also think Riley Skinner is a very experienced and very smart QB.

PA, you have to have the best job in the world lol… All the great places you get to go

Coach, those upsets usually come down to making a play or two. It’s hard to sit here and say the upset will definitely happen. In the bigger picture, you’ve got to be in position, and this team was in better position to close the deal at Wake than I ever saw it under the previous administration. I hope they get one they’re not supposed to later on.

Yea Riley can make all the NFL throws!
September 12, 2008 at 12:14 pm |
TrueReb, I still enjoy it. When I don’t enjoy it anymore, I guess I can sell insurance or something. There are some really odd hours and time away from the family, but we’ve adjusted through the years. The work schedule also makes me more available to help out at home during the day if necessary. I do enjoy seeing different parts of the country.

will our recruiting get any better?
September 12, 2008 at 12:15 pm |
How will this staff compare to the last in terms of recruiting? Will they sign the best athletes OR the best athletes that will definetly qualify?
September 12, 2008 at 12:15 pm |
Riley is extremely accurate, but he’s also in an offense that lets him make a lot of high percentage throws.

Coach, I think with this staff you’re going to see more focus on 3-star prospects who will qualify.
It was an absolute joy in August not to have to deal with the NCAA clearinghouse or with someone’s attorney.
That won’t always be the case but that will be Houston’s MO most of the time.

Yea, Ican see how that could be hard at times. As for me , thanks for all ur hard work

Do you think that MSU having a poor season (I know it isn’t over) could lead to de-commitments and switching to the Rebels?
September 12, 2008 at 12:18 pm |
TrueReb, thank you for reading and posting. I appreciate all you guys being here, gals too. I think we have some on here from time to time.

Coach, there’s always that possibility. You never know what will be the determining factor with a 17-year-old kid who is being exposed to a big, new world. I think recruiting is going to be OK. Who else wanted Brandon Bolden? There are some pretty good kids being redshirted too … Lekenwic Haynes and Jason Jones on defense, the Harris kids at receiver. I say they’re being redshirt. That may not be the case. I just know they haven’t played yet.

Better late than never. What changes do you see upfront with the running game.
September 12, 2008 at 12:23 pm |
Where do you see Michael Oher going in the NFL Draft next Spring?
September 12, 2008 at 12:25 pm |
Geddy, I really don’t think Samford will pose a problem in the passing game. They run it 2-3 of the time and haven’t focused on the passing game yet. We’ll see.
Bham, I look for a lot more focus on the base formation and an effort to get more than one back into a groove. I don’t think you’re going to see different people being used, necessarily. I still think it will be Eason, Bolden and Enrique, maybe with a little more attention to Bolden.
Coach, not sure where Oher will go, but he’s being projected as a first-rounder.

What are our nonconference games next year?
September 12, 2008 at 12:30 pm |
Guys, it was fun, but I’ve got to get back on my wife’s chore list. Football Friday night will be here before you know it. I will respond later to any questions or comments added to this thread.

Good job PA. You’ve done a great job with this site and we all enjoy your content on the Rebels.
September 12, 2008 at 4:44 pm |
enjoyed your chats, now who is really going to win the game tomorrow?
September 12, 2008 at 5:37 pm |
Omdstep, I appreciate your support. Thanks for reading and posting.
OleBull, I’m sticking with the Rebels against Samford.
Coach, off the top of my head, seems like UAB comes on next year. Memphis is under contract for one more year. I don’t believe there is a BCS non-conference game next year.

Sorry I couldn’t get to the blog earlier, we’re hunkering down here waiting for our electricity to go off! Who do you think Ol’ Miss will surprise in your conference this year?
September 12, 2008 at 9:03 pm |
I think Ole Miss might pull a surprise somewhere. Maybe Alabama or Auburn? Could happen. Glad you were able to get on before the power went out there in Southwest Houston. Get those brownies out of the oven, and tell your lovely wife to come in out of the storm.
