FOOTBALL: SEC adds a lower-tier bowl game

This just in from ESPN media services:

ESPN Regional Television (ERT) today announced that the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., will host a matchup between the BIG EAST Conference and the Southeastern Conference starting in 2008.

The matchup between a bowl-eligible team from the SEC and one from the BIG EAST came about as the result of negotiations between the two conferences and Conference USA, and with the approval of the NCAA Postseason Bowl Committee. The announcement was made today at the annual Football Bowl Association meetings in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

“The approval of the St. Petersburg Bowl offered both Conference USA and the BIG EAST an opportunity to participate in a Florida based bowl game,” said Pete Derzis, Senior Vice President & General Manager, ERT. “Consequently, we were able to partner with the SEC in Birmingham.

“We look forward to the added excitement that the Southeastern Conference will bring to the already successful Papajohns.com Bowl. Birmingham and the SEC, with their lengthy traditions in football, are a natural fit. We’re pleased to present such a matchup to the community.”

The third annual Papajohns.com Bowl will be played at Legion Field on Dec. 29. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. CT and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN and broadcast nationally on ESPN Radio.

This is good news. Give teams in lower echelon performance within the SEC a change to play in bowl games. MSU, Vandy, Ky, three (3) teams that come to mind now. Not familiar with teams in the Big East, but helpful to that conference as well.

Yeah leaving OM off that list is a good thing. Y’all are still gonna suck worst than everyone else.

    worse too.

There won’t be 9 SEC bowl eligible on a consistent basis. But on the off-chance there is, it will draw more the CUSA’s 2nd place finisher in BHAM anyway. I think we are below lower tier at 0 & 8 until the 08 season kicks, if I’m not mistaken.

baseball team won 5 to 3 over jackson state tonight. more solid pitching, but a little shaky fielding. we had one inning where we had 2 errors and 2 unearned runs, but other than that the fielding was solid. baker went 5 innings, giving up 3 runs, one earned. jake morgan goes 3 scoreless innings and bittle pitches the 9th for the save. hitting had 11 hits, but stranded 12 runners, but the 5 runs were enough. the 2 smiths had a homer each. our pitching staff got back on track during the midweek, giving up 2 earned runs over 2 games. hopefully that will carry over to this weekend. also the hitting has been much improved the last week or so, and that needs to continue as well. the key to beating georgia may be getting the key hits, instead of getting a lot of hits but not a lot of runs
