FOOTBALL: Thursday night games … are you in?

Personally, I’m a fan of a Thursday night game each season, because it gives me a Saturday off that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

I understand the administration’s point that it disrupts the academic environment. I also think, as someone pointed out below, that it can disrupt attendance and gate receipts. Certainly it disrupts all-day tailgating in the Grove.

It’s a burden on many families to ask them to drive in from several hours away for a late kickoff on a school night.

State has been a Thursday night regular when opportunities are available. I remember covering State at BYU in 2000, flying back in to town at 5:30, then working football Friday night in the office because we were short-staffed at the time. Made for a long day to wake up before 6 in the mountain time zone and be chasing prep football in the central time zone after 11.

You State fans that trot through here, do you like the Thursday games? Is there a recruit you think signed on because of the exposure?

I think that it is a great idea. some people on this blog have said that it would mess up ticket sales. but i think all of you are forgetting that it is at Wake, so we dont care about that part of it. if we could get a W on a big stage like that, then it would really help out our image and would be good for confidence

Would be a good move for publicity…I love having a Thursday night game to watch through the year.

Va Reb do you make it down to Oxford much?

As a father of young kids and living over 2 hours from Oxford, I like TV games. From a personal standpoint, take any Thursday night game so I can watch.

From an AD standpoint, do whatever makes the most money.

BcS schools rarely play during the week. ADs typically are business minded and do what needs to be done financially. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m thinking BcS schools typically make more from a non-TV Saturday game than they can from a TV Thursday game.

I think the BCS schools that play on Thursday are those that feel they need the exposure. Louisville, West Virginia, Rutgers, Georgia Tech, MSU, Kentucky. The list could go on, but it does not include Texas, Michigan and USC.

I’m a big fan of the Thursday night. It’s usually the only one I get to watch more than a few plays.

Any Weekday game will give an increased advantage to a home team as most out of town fans will more likely have to work during the week.

we need all the exposure we can get. when i was at OM we had a few thur night games vs tenn in memphis and also the ot game vs ark. i dont remember attendance being any problem. We are at the bottom of the sec and need to rebuild the image of our program. Thur night games are great exposure for the school and the football program.

The Arkansas OT game was not on a Thursday.

We played Arkansas on Thursday night in 1997 and beat them pretty good. Probably helped Danny Ford get the boot.
I like Thursday night games for multiple reasons. 1) It’s the only game on at the time and that is a huge recruiting tool. 2) It gives you some hope for Thursday because, let’s face it, Thursday is no Friday. 3) College football on TV is better than 99.9% of TV at anytime.
    Just my thoughts….

PA, I don’t get to Oxford as much as I would like. Was born and raised in Ackerman (yeah only 20 miles from the Dawg Pound). Still own property there. Our daughter and her best friends graduated from Ole Miss. While on active duty in the Navy, our family lived in Ackerman while I was stationed at Meridian and we watched every home game over a period of nine years. After leaving MS, though, it has only been about once a year. Sure do miss it. Currently planning on retiring from NASA in about five years and looking to settle around Nashville. That way I can drive down and watch all the Rebel home games and also catch a few Vol and Commodore games, as well. So, ANY time I can see the Rebs on TV, it’s great. Larry

The reason that i like the Thursday night game is because after the kids go to bed I can watch the game in peace and quiet.

That might be the best point I’ve heard. But also, if your like me you’ll wake the kids up yelling at the TV.
