BASEBALL: Disappointed Kentucky

How ironic, as Jimmy points out below, that three of the four left standing in the SEC tournament are Western Division teams. Alabama eliminated Kentucky 13-4 and advances to play LSU in an announced start time of 1 p.m. today. The only game of the day that is likely to begin close to its announced start time will be Ole Miss’ 10 a.m. game against Vanderbilt.

Alabama, as is often the case in postseason, found a talented pitcher on its roster that played behind more experienced players and didn’t get many opportunities in the regular season. Del Howell had pitched only about 14 innings but went 6 1-3 and allowed only three runs against Kentucky.

He gave his team a chance to win, and his offense responded with runs.

Here’s what Kentucky coach John Cohen had to say after the game. Sounds like he wanted to move pretty far away from the thought that the Wildcats could have been dealing with a hangover from the way their late game with Ole Miss ended.

COHEN:

“Well, I am disappointed in our kids tonight becasue I felt like they just didn’t show up. We did not cover bases or execute the way they normally do. I think they were enarmored with the 12,000 Alabama fans. We just had a discussion about that. I know for the past 18-20 games our kids have been very focused on what they are doing and I am very proud of them for that but tonight we went backwards. We have to get going in the right direction right now. We want to win our regional next week and you can’t win playing the way we played tonight. I credit Alabama, I know they wanted to beat us badly.”

“If we were more disappointed with the way we lost last night then that makes me even more disappointed because that is not the nature of our kids. We have very special kids who have worked very hard and to end the way we ended tonight is very disappointing. It is my job as a coach to get them going in the right direction and I can guarantee that it will be a different club that takes the field next week in the NCAA Tournament.”

PA – Who is Vandy throwing today?

Just got powered on here at the park. Vandy is throwing Taylor Hill, a right-hander who has appeared in 15 games, started seven, and has thrown 43 innings. He’s 5-2 with a 4.19 ERA. He’s Ricky Bowen or Taylor Thompson, the guy who has shut Ole Miss down more than once this season.

Hopefully Ole Miss truly has turned a corner offensively. The Rebels have swung better in these two games.
