BASEBALL: A few notes on LSU, today’s opponent

A few notes on LSU

  • The Tigers have won 19 straight, a school record. The only other LSU team to win 19 in a row was the 1997 team that went on to win one of the program’s five national championships.
  • LSU has a record of 42-16, an RPI of 11 and figures to be playing for a national seed today.
  • LSU has won the SEC tournament six times but not since 2000. This is the Tigers’ first championship game appearance since 2003.
  • The last team to beat LSU was Georgia, which won 9-8 in Baton Rouge April 19. LSU lost that series with two losses and a tie. That was the weekend after Ole Miss defeated LSU two games to one in Oxford.
  • LSU’s win streak includes road series sweeps at Kentucky and Auburn and home series sweeps against South Carolina and Mississippi State.
  • In the SEC tournament the Tigers have defeated South Carolina 5-4 (10 innings), Vanderbilt 8-2 and Alabama 12-8. They trailed at some point in each of those games.
  • The power ball the Tigers displayed Saturday was reminiscent of Skip Bertman’s teams of the 1990s. DH Blake Dean hit the grand slam to take control of the game. It was the third slam of the year for LSU.

Sorry, Blake Dean, can’t pull for you and your team today. Blake and I share the same home town of Crestview, Fl. Blake, my grandson Logan and granddau Ariel crossed paths a few times at Bulldog HS. GO REBELS!!!

  2. Rebel TCT Says:

Made the tournament with the last seed. Opened with the SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs. Championship sunday finds only 2 teams that can win this tournamnet : LSU and Ole Miss. I’d say that is making the most of a late season opportunity for the Rebels.

  3. Raleighrebel Says:

Jimmy, my mother lives in Crestview, FL. Nice place. Glad to hear there’s more than one Rebel down there.

  4. Jimmy Barbee Says:

Raleighrebel, yes Crestview nice place to live. Weve been here about nine years (9). Probably got more Rebels fans here that at Starksville. Our telecast here for the Rebel-LSU game has been delayed due to Miami and Va playing for ACC tournment. It should be over soon.
