BASEBALL: Catching up with Guerrero

Talked with Ole Miss center fielder Michael Guerrero a few minutes ago. He hasn’t received an offer from the Nationals yet but that could change tonight or tomorrow.

The 21st round is a little later than Michael was expecting to go, which makes this process a little more difficult for him.

The fact that Guerrero was taken in the 21st round and Logan Power went in the 25th round gives the Rebels a shot at retaining two starting outfielders. A few rounds earlier, and Guerrero wouldn’t be struggling too much, and a few rounds earlier is likely where he’d have been had he not missed so many games over the second half of the SEC season.

Haven’t heard from Power, but Guerrero was of the opinion that Power was leaning toward returning to school.

“I think he’s leaning toward coming back. He wanted me to come back so we could both play our senior years together. That would be fun, because we get along great in the outfield,” Guerrero said.

I hope both return. A complement with Matt Smith in power hitting for the Rebel team. The college degree is more important; they may need it down the road. It could be more important than where they wind up in pro ball.

I hope he returns but I understand if he doesn’t. The window to getting to the bigs is very small; 3 to 4 years and realistically by 27 or 28. The money is a part of it but the right team is also important. I’m not a fan of the Nationals organization and if Guerrero returns I think this may be as important as any of the other issues. There is feeling that if you want to get “there” you need to get started and this is a an opportunity that only come around when you are young – college degrees, while important, can be gained anytime.

There’s also an idea with a lot of these players that they’re “supposed” to go because everyone else is. A lot of it has to do with age. You look around, see friends leaving and wonder if you really shouldn’t leave too.

Good point – maybe Logan will have some influence. This would certainly fill out two big slots in the batting order.
