MEDIA DAYS: Miles having fun at Saban’s expense

LSU coach Les Miles was asked about his willingness to jab at Alabama on the off-season speaking circuit.

Miles poked his LSU predcessor, Nick Saban, whose first Crimson TIde team lost 21-14 to La.-Monroe last fall. It’s the second straight summer that Miles has made some sort of off-the-cuff comment about Alabama. Maybe he figures last year LSU won the national championship, so why change?

“It seems like a lot of teams in Louisiana beat that team,” Miles said to a group of alumni and fans in New Orleans last week when the topic of Alabama football was approached.

LSU was pulling away from Ole Miss in Oxford last November as La.-Monroe, my alma mater, was hanging on against the Tide in Tuscaloosa. The Ole Miss game had turned by that point, and I wasn’t the only person in the press box giving more than passing attention to the Bama-ULM Gametracker.

“I have great respect for the University of Alabama, the history they have presented to college football, the competition they put forth every time they take the field,” Miles said. “I promise you, any fun and entertainment I have with our supporters is very respectful. I love college football, the fun and the young men that play it.”

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt, whose Arkansas team defeated then-No. 1 LSU in Baton Rouge in the final regular season game, must have been impressed by ULM’s win. He hired two coaches off that staff, safeties coach Kim Dameron and receivers coach Ron Dickerson Jr.

Where did Nutt get his strength coach. I heard a rumor (maybe from this blog) that a few players have made big improvements over the summer. Oher in particular. I thought most of our many losses last year were due to 2nd half/4th quarter collapses, conditioning.

So in a way, he was being cockey, and in a way he wasn’t?

Very interesting dialogue taking place over of djbulldogs blog pertaining to the following subject:

“Our offense is definitely going to open up”

  4. djrebel Says:

03, Nutt’s strength coach is Don Decker. He was at Arkansas for the last 15 years.

Kylebuddy, Miles was definitely being cocky, but he was just doing it all in good fun in the presence of LSU fans. He was telling them what they wanted to hear.

I hope what I am reading into this story is that the Ole Miss coaching staff has advantage over tide and tigers. We will be more than happy to take it. Need all the help can get for this upcoming season.

PA, what’s your thoughts on Slive’s comments on Powe?

    ——————————————————————————–
“Ole Miss has been very dilligent in dealing with that issue. When they deem it appropriate to initiate further discussions, we’ll have those discussions. But at this point, I have no further comment and that’s all I’m going to say on that.”

“As I said in my remarks, the (new SEC) legislation was legislation designed to deal with NCAA change. The matter of Jerrell Powe is a totally separate matter and so I’m just not going to comment any further on Jerrell Powe at this point.”

  7. djrebel Says:

TCfan, I think the SEC will have a greater say in when the announcement is made than those comments indicate. I figure an announcement will come either Friday or early next week.
