FOOTBALL: Notes and tid-bits

Players are going through the indoor walk-through about now with the outdoor practice set for the much less comfortable time of 5:20.

Players will be available tomorrow at media day. Houston Nutt speaks at 9:30 with players and assistant coaches to follow. I’ll head over later in the afternoon and will stay the night with Jeff Roberson of the Ole Miss Spirit. A bachelor, Jeff graciously opens his place as a sort of bunkhouse at times. …

Among the 34 newcomers to report Saturday were six walk-ons: offensive linemen Bobby Peterson and Brent Hanson, linebackers Marques Jenkins, defensive back Marcus Temple and Aaron Nichols and kicker Bryson Rose. …

As of Sunday Houston had not set a first day in pads, but look for that to be Wednesday or Thursday. …

I thought Nutt had an interesting comment on Greg Hardy yesterday when he said “Coach Rocker will know when to put him with the first group.” If Hardy’s attitude has indeed been adjusted then he properly received the message that was sent by his second-team status in the spring. There’s no sense beating around the bush, though, about Hardy’s importance to this team. Hopefully Hardy’s mental framework will be there, because he has excellent skills. …

This players report stuff is really a little anticlimactic now with so many of them on hand for summer workouts. Everybody’s ready to see players on the field, and that time is here.
