FOOTBALL: Update on Kermit Tyler

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt told us on Saturday that all the freshmen he expected to report did indeed report, but in discussing who did not make it, he — and we — overlooked offensive lineman Kermit Tyler.

Tyler did not report, because it was discovered during his summer workouts on campus that he suffered from what trainer Tim Mullins calls a “very rare allergic reaction.” This was revealed in tests in Oxford and Jackson this summer.

The reaction worsens when he participates in strenuous exercise.

Tyler, a 6-4, 335-pound tackle from New Orleans, showed symptoms at times during his high school career but really not much as a senior.

Tyler will not be able to play football, but the university will honor his scholarship.

“That’s a really good thing that Pete Boone did,” Nutt said. “That young man will be able to get his education, and his family will be ambassadors for Ole Miss for life.”

va reb, I agree. I know that I have bad mouthed Boone over the last few years (i.e. Coach O). It is great to see something like this.
