FOOTBALL: Thursday practice notes

The Rebels had their first afternoon practice indoors, and a number of players were not available to take part.

Free safety Johnny Brown (hamstring), defensive linemen Ted Laurent (knee) and LaMark Armour (knee) all remained out, but several new names were added to the absentee list in starting left offensive guard Reid Neely, defensive end Greg Hardy (foot), linebacker Lamar Brumfield (back) and freshman offensive lineman Josh Tatum (illness).

Hardy’s absence comes a day after he had very productive day of work on Wednesday. His injury is not believed to be serious, and Nutt said he was held out as a precaution.

Neely, meanwhile, has a strained Achilles tendon, and it’s not sure when he’ll be back.

Laurent is still several weeks out, and Armour will likely require arthroscopic surgery soon.

With Neely out, senior Darryl Harris moved over to right guard, and John Jerry moved to the first team at right tackle. It was the first work this camp at first team for Jerry, a two-year starter, who is working his way back into form after missing spring drills.

In spite of the missing people, Nutt cited his offense for bouncing back from an unproductive day against the defense Wednesday. He credited quarterbacks Jevan Snead and Billy Tapp for their work and said the receivers had a good day of route-running and making plays.

The Rebels are back on the field Friday afternoon and will be in full gear for the first time.

PA, are any of the kickers standing out?

Honestly, I haven’t watched the kickers much. Shene has done OK with his placement kicks. I noticed the other day that Bryson Rose, a walk-on, was making some kicks but the ones I watched seemed to lack authority. I haven’t seen Sparks much on kickoffs yet.

Hey guys, looks like I’m finally back in the saddle again. For almost 3 grueling months I’ve had to live without internet trying to get a new home set up, working second shift, and take care of a new baby. But finally, I had time to go to the telephone co. and get signed up for internet a week ago or so, and they just got me linked up about 2 minutes ago. This is the first place I went to. Can’t wait to get back to being a regular, and just in time too. Hotty Toddy

Yeah, yeah, OR, excuses, excuses. (Ha) Welcome back to the 21st Century, and thanks for checking in.
