FOOTBALL: Friday practice notes

— Disaster was avoided moments ago when trainer Tim Mullins said the sprained knee suffered by defensive tackle Peria Jerry was graded minor. The senior All-SEC candidate came up limping in drill work against the offensive line in this first day in full gear.

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said Jerry will be held out a couple of days. Mullins called him day-to-day.

Jerry has gotten off to a good start in camp in terms of both leadership and his own performance.

— In the absence of Jerry true freshman Justin Smith (6-3, 280, Alpharetta, Ga.) got lots of reps with the first team, jumping over redshirt freshman Justin Sanders. Nutt said he likes Smith’s intelligence and aggressiveness.

— Jerry’s absence no doubt affected the team scrimmage work at the end, but even so, the offensive line has made great strides from earlier in the week. The quarterbacks had time to throw, and both Jevan Snead and Nathan Stanley had some nice downfield completions.

Shay Hodge had a couple of impressive catches on the day, one in seven-on-seven red zone work when he his momentum was carrying him forward and right out of bounds, but he reached back to his left to make the catch.

— Jerrell Powe continues to run with the third team. He had some nice plays in drill work against the offensive line, twice running pretty much over or pushing back backup center Brandon Green, but Powe hasn’t been a dominating force in scrimmage work yet. He seems to be getting a lot of encouragement and receiving a lot of attention from defensive line coach Tracy Rocker.

— WIth junior Kendrick Lewis out today with a slight ankle sprain, the Rebels were down to their third free safety to run with the first group, and that was sophomore Fon Ingram.

— The Rebels will work for an hour on the practice field tomorrow at 11 a.m., then move to the stadium for a 100-play scrimmage. Tomorrow’s work will be the last that is open to the public.

This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

A great day to all Blessings. JB
