FYI: Chat on

I’m here in the office with a pile of Tab work to finish, and I’m having one of those working lunches. I’ll be here for the next 30 minutes if anyone wants to talk Ole Miss.

Post a question or comment below. It’s been an interesting camp so far, and a dangerous one if you’re on the defensive side of the ball.

Nothing to chat about, just to let you know that I think you are doing a great job for Rebel reporting. Thanks PA. Jimmy

  2. djrebel Says:

    Thanks Jimmy.

  3. BirdZ! Says:

Several nagging injuries in Starkville, too, PA.

Any doubt that Jerry and Hardy will be back for the opener?

  4. VA Reb Says:

PA, I checked in to late to join in, but wanted to ask if the rash of injuries is just part of the game, or is it the heat or lack of conditioning or something else? Any thoughts? Larry

  5. djrebel Says:

Not sure on Hardy. We were told early that the injury was minor, now it’s looking like he could be out a while. I think Jerry will be ready before the opener.

Larry, I think the injuries are just part of this time of year. I don’t think the conditioning is a problem. They’ve been contact injuries. Haven’t seen too many people bent over and hurling.

  6. rebeltent Says:

PA, have you heard any number of Rebel season ticket sales? Thanks.

  7. VA Reb Says:

Just saw in USA Today that Ole Miss is favored (early) over UM by 8. Don’t guess I am too late….I forgot that you guys are on Central Standard Time!!

  8. djrebel Says:

About 39,000 last time I heard, which was last week. I know there’s a lot of excitement for Nutt, and I figure that number goes up a little.

  9. rebeltent Says:

Also, does it look as if Baby J is almost caught up with the rest of the number 1 OL? I know he is running with the 1’s, but even a mediocre J. Jerry is better than most of our second line.

  10. VA Reb Says:

Haven’t heard much about Powe lately…is he going to make it to second team?

  11. djrebel Says:

Interesting situation. John Jerry is a talent, but there may be a motivation issue going on. After the scrimmage Saturday Kent Austin answered a John Jerry question in a rather firm manner saying, “We really need him to come on.” Don’t know if John is having some injury issues still hold him back or what.

  12. rebeltent Says:

PA, that ticket number does not include student sales yet, or does it?

  13. djrebel Says:

Not sure if it includes students. I’m thinking it does not include the “mini” season ticket packages, which is what I would buy if I was a ticket-buy fan.

  14. djrebel Says:

Larry, I figure Powe will make it up to the second team. He’s been good in drill work. You can really see the quickness of his feet and his athleticism. But you can see the rust in the scrimmages. He’s just been average, not spectacular.

  15. rebeltent Says:

The pre-season injuries suck, but we could be much worse off. No one has been declared season ending yet, such as, All-SEC TE at FL with an ACL tear, or starting AUB CB with an ACL tear. Or positions that are hard to fill back up, SC OL on crutches last week, and So.Cal. starting QB out. Don’t get me wrong, P. Jerry and Hardy will be missed, but at least it is an area with depth, and back-ups can step in and know what is going on.

  16. djrebel Says:

More on Powe. I have seen him run over the blocker in front of him a couple of times. He really handled Brandon Green on a couple of 1-on-1 plays last week, and Nutt really likes Green, the backup center. I just haven’t seen Powe make an “wow” plays in the scrimmages.

  17. djrebel Says:

Honestly, I don’t think it’s bad for Peria to be out right now. If he’s on the schedule they think he’s on, he’ll be back in plenty of time. He knows what’s going on on the field, and this time away will have his legs fresh.

    — PA

  18. rebeltent Says:

PA, do you think Nutt will rotate players a lot at certain positions, such as WR, RB, CB, LB, and DL (when fully healthy) to keep guys fresh, or do you see him going the way the last couple staff’s went and keep #1’s in the majority of the time.

  19. VA Reb Says:

Can you notice much of a difference in Hardy’s attitude this year?

  20. djrebel Says:

I don’t know what his MO was at Arkansas in that regard. Some places you don’t want to sub out much, like at OL. You want that continuity. I think you’ll see at least three corners — Mouzon, Vaughn and Green — getting a lot of time, and I think you’ll see at least three running backs — and they’ll all be good ones.

    — PA

  21. djrebel Says:

I do not notice a different in Hardy’s attitude. When he talks to us there’s still a lot of “me” in everything he says. I thought he was giving good effort in practice, though, before the injury.

    — PA

  22. rebeltent Says:

Thanks for answering the sub question, what about the LBers? They were once thought to be a weakness this spring, but some of them have really come on, and with Trahan getting cleared, we have 6 viable options. I am not sold on Fein being a wash yet either. Thanks.

  23. rebeltent Says:

PA, thanks for the time to chat with us today.

  24. djrebel Says:

Thanks for joining us guys. If you want to leave an additional question or comment on this post please do. I’ll be checking it periodically and will respond when I can. Right now I’ve got to get back on the Belhaven and Thrasher High stories.

  25. djrebel Says:

Tent, thanks for checking in. Assuming Waker’s injury is minor, I think it could be a good group. He’s kind of the wild card, a highly recruited player who didn’t get much time under Ed. I think the linebackers have had a good camp so far. If the DL is as good as it’s made out to be, the linebackers should be free to make a lot of plays.

  26. VA Reb Says:

    Thanks, PA.

  27. tcfan Says:

PA, what does the RB competition look like? I’ve heard Bolden is very impressive, but what’s your take on it? Do you think either takes Eason’s starting job?

  28. tcfan Says:

Oops..forgot to include Enrique.. do you think Enrique or Bolden takes Easons job?

  29. dawgintheswamp Says:

PA, quick question what ever happened to Davis, Eason’s high school teammate? Last I heard he was at Ole Miss with Eason. One of them, I can’t remember which, was hurt senior year at Meridian. Thanks

  30. djrebel Says:

TCfan, I’m not sure either one takes Cordera’s job. Eason and Enrique have different styles, Eason more of a straight-ahead power back, and Enrique more shifty, quicker in the hole. I think both will play a lot.

My perception from signing day was that those two guys would be in the lead and that Brandon Bolden and Devin Thomas would push for playing time too.

Bolden is ahead of Thomas at this point. Bolden has been very impressive, and it’s clear the staff likes him by the number of reps he gets and the ways they use him. They lined up in the Wild Rebel twice Saturday, and both times Bolden was the back with McCluster. They also use him to return punts. Right now he’s the second man there behind Marshay Green.

Dawgintheswamp, Derrick Davis has actually be the No. 2 running back behind Eason. I expect some changes to be made today, and that may be one of them. Derrick Davis just hasn’t hit the hole as fast as Enrique or Bolden.

I like Eason’s potential as a power back. I think he’ll be a load to handle on a screen pass too.

  31. Mooch Says:

Hey PA, did Bittle ever sign with the Yankees?

  32. RebelNGA Says:

Thanks PA for your EXCELLENT coverage. Over here in GA they don’t know there is a western division of the SEC much less anything about Ole Miss. The Atlanta Fishwrapper is lucky to include a score. It is nice to know what is going on a daily basis. Thank again.

  33. TrueReb Says:

    Talk about our CB’z PA

  34. djrebel Says:

Mooch, the deadline is Aug. 15. I’m told last year the Yankees signed a bunch of guys the day before the deadline. I’ve tried to reach Scott but haven’t heard back from him. Don’t know exactly where he stands, but it sounds like there’s a good chance he’ll return.

Thanks GA. Location, location, location, as they say. We don’t do a whole lot on the Eastern Division.

Truereb, Marshay Green isn’t running with the 1s right now (unless that changes today), but I know Houston likes him a lot. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a rotation of Mouzon and Vaughn (the most experienced), plus Green (talented and high-energy guy). DeMareo Marr is still learning and hasn’t been in the first two units.
