FYI: So long friend

I bid so long to Gregg Ellis, who is leaving the Journal but isn’t leaving the neighborhood with his new job as basketball media relations director at Mississippi State.

Beat writers are often mentioned in tandem. Gregg and I were generally on the same path coverage-wise and always at the same events SEC-wise since he started covering Ole Miss I believe in 2000. Now he’s working for State. This represents quite a turnaround from his early days on the MSU beat when some held a belief that an Ole Miss grad and Ole Miss beat writer couldn’t provide quality coverage of the Bulldogs.

Not only co-workers, Gregg and I have watched our sons, Zach and Kyle, grow together in school and sports.

Anyway, this is a great opportunity for Gregg to return to his original career path. Newspaper was never the intended destination, though it was a successful side street. He remains in athletics, so his pace, while different, will remain hectic.

Brad Locke’s pace will be hectic as well, not that it wasn’t already as prep editor. Welcome Brad.

In the age of cell phones, email and text messaging I don’t get mushy at times like this and have just one question for Gregg.

Can I have your laptop?

PA, you talked to GG today? Or was he too busy changing diapers?

He’s here and we’re talking right now. His kids are several years past diapers. He’s busy with lots of other things right now though.
