FOOTBALL: Quick notes from presser

— No TV for Vanderbilt. 6 p.m. start.

— Brandon Bolden practiced yesterday and showed no effects from the hit he took on his shoulder. He is expected to practice this week and be full-go Saturday. Same for Peria Jerry. Houston said he thought the biggest benefit for Jerry was the confidence he was able to show in his knee.

— Houston has strong praise for QB Jevan Snead but was lukewarm on his run game. Wants to get better there. It’s a combination of things along the offensive line and backs, he said. He indicated a “simplification” of some things that will allow players to react quicker and not be hesitant in their assigmenments.

He was talking about offense at the time, but he said simplification may be in order for some things on defense as well.

— Still “a couple of weeks” out on Greg Hardy. He’s doing a lot of running in the pool and working to get back. May be in line for a few snaps agaisnt Vanderbilt here in two weeks.

— Saturday’s game will be the first between the Rebels and the Samford Bulldogs, though the schools split a pair of games in the 1930s when they were the “Mississippi Flood” and Howard College.

With our big and talented O line, I DID expect to see much more success running up the middle. Wake’s defense is pretty good but not as good as some we will see in the SEC. I look forward to seeing Coach Nutt get that fixed, and I believe he will.

That is going to be sad that the Vandy game isn’t going to be on t.v. That has been one of the best games over the last few years. Oh well, I wouldn’t want to mess them up on picking up miss. state.

I like the idea of simplifying the running game some. Hopefully, that also means they”ll simplify it for Bolden–the reg. stuff plus wild rebel, kickoff returns, etc. may be too much on a freshman. After seeing him in person Sat., what came to mind were hints/flashes of Hershal Walker.

I believe State plays @ Georgia Tech that weekend, so if State is on TV, it won’t be b/c of the SEC TV contract.
