FIRST QUARTER

Samford gained three first downs on its opening possession. No big plays but just enough to move the chains and just enough help from Ole Miss. Sparks kickoff went out of bounds, so the drive began at the 40. Ole Miss also had a pass interference penalty against Marshay Green, making his first start at corner ahead of Dustin Mouzon, on an incompletion on third-and-4 from the 32. Ultimately the Bulldogs failed to score when John Paul Fraites was wide on a 39-yard field goal attempt.

Ole Miss started the game without a fullback and ran the first three plays that way. The Rebels drive bogged down at the 16 after a pass for loss to Jason Cook and an incomplete pass with heat on Snead. Joshua Shene hit a 33-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 4:15 left in the quarter.

The drive covered 63 yards on 11 plays in 5:02. Cordera Eason ran three times for 16 yards, and Snead was 4-for-5 on the drive with completions of 17 yards to Mike Wallace and 28 to Dexter McCluster.

There was one Wild Rebel play with McCluster handing to Brandon Bolden for a 4-yard loss.

Sparks kicked to the 3 this time, but Samford has crossed into Ole Miss territory for the second time following a roughing the passer call against Kentrell Lockett.

Samford punted after Locket and Peria Jerry had a tackle behind the line on fourth down from the Ole Miss 45.

Snead was just picked off by safety Jeremy Richardson. The throw was into traffic. It was a turnover after a near turnover on the play before when Eason fumbled at the end of an 8-yard gain, but Jason Cook recovered. Richardson, a Moss Point native, returned the ball to the 13. His knee buckled, and he was carried off the field with an injury that did not appear to be minor.

It takes Samford one play to score. Wide receiver Riley Hawkins goes 13 yards on a reverse for the touchdown with 1:09 left in the first. Samford 7, Ole Miss 3.

Rebels are sleep-walking through this one at this point with penalties and now a turnover. Samford is threatening.

Eason had gotten off to a good start with a couple of runs, then the fumble. He’s had ball-protection problems before. There are too many options at running back to stay too long when a guy is having problems like that.

John Jerry just left with an injury. He’s been replaced by Reid Neely.

Samford 7, Ole Miss 3
