FOOTBALL: Powe in the backfield

Defensive tackle Jerrell Powe said he’s getting better with his technique, and it showed with a tackle behind the line that drew loud cheers from the home fans in the first half of Saturday’s 23-17 loss to Vanderbilt.

“It felt good to get out there and make plays at home. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” Powe said.

While Powe had a good feeling individually, it was a different story collectively.

Vanderbilt took advantage of six turnovers by the Rebels’ offense, one of them an interception returned for a touchdown.

“It’s hard to know you’re out there playing your best ball on the lines, and they’re getting points they really haven’t worked that hard for.”

The defensive line overall played like you thought it was going to play this year. These guys are healthy, and they’re going to be pretty good.

Powe and Lawon Scott are going to provide quality depth behind starters Peria Jerry and Ted Laurent who really played well against Vandy.

The big question as the season rolls along will be how much the secondary can improve in pass coverage.
