FOOTBALL: Tuesday morning links

As bad as it was for Jevan Snead, and it was the first time he’d thrown four interceptions in a game at any level, Ole Miss coaches and players haven’t lost confidence in the Texas transfer. They haven’t lost confidence in Dexter McCluster either. McCluster tied a career-high with seven catches and set a career-high with 132 receiving yards, but his fumble into the end zone cost the Rebels a probably game-winning touchdown in the 23-17 loss to Vanderbilt. McCluster stayed up until 5 in the morning replaying the fumble in his mind.

In my opinion, McCluster is a talented athlete who should be used in the open field as a receiver or as a runner in the open field where he excels. He should NOT be counted on in short yardage situations….that’s why we have Bolden, Eason, etc.. As for Snead, he had a game where it sounded like he was forcing the ball into spots where he shouldn’t. If he is half as good as expected, he’ll correct that. If not, we’re in for a long, long season. Still waiting for the O’line to step up and blow up some defensive linemen. If you can’t run between the tackles, you aren’t going to win too many games unless you have the talent of Florida. Good to see South Panola on national TV this weekend.

I’m really starting to get the feeling that maybe this loss (and the way we went about giving the game away) may be the best thing for our young team long term. I believe as competeive as these kids are, they can use this as motivation. Think about this, we are 2-2 right now. We finally beat Memphis as authoritatively as we should have been doing all along. Sure we have lost to games; but look at where those two teams we lost to are sitting today. Both are in the top 25! We lost by a coombined 8 point margin in those two games.

I feel like we are close. Maybe one big upset away from really getting on a roll. In my mind, win our lose, this weekend’s game in Gainsville will go a long way in determining how good of a team we will end up having this year (an maybe even the future). Its crucial that we come out Sat. and play competitively. Nobody believes in us. The spread Sat. is 23. I say if we can keep within 2 touchdowns were we are still in it in the 4th, then we can really grow as a team a lot. Seems to me that its time for Nutt to start circling the wagons. There is somthing to be said about an us aginst the world mentality in sports.
