FOOTBALL: Predictions anyone?

I was covering high schools in Meridian at a time and happened to be on a local radio show. Meridian was getting ready to play Moss Point, and the host called late Moss Point coach Billy Miller for a few minutes on the air.

Miller was a character. The last question the host asked was, “Coach, do you have any predictions for Friday night?”

Miller gave a couple. “Predictions? Yeah, yeah, I have some predictions. I predict it will take Meridian about three hours to get down here, and the game will get over about 10. Then Meridian will each chicken in our bleachers and get home close to 2 in the morning.”

The point is, there’s not just one way to predict this Ole Miss-Florida game. You have to predict Ole Miss with turnovers  — because it’s a trend the Rebels have shown for three games — and Ole Miss without turnovers, assuming their renewed focus and attention pays some dividends.

Ole Miss will turnovers will be catastrophic for the Rebels, because Florida doesn’t turn it over. The Gators are plus-9 in turnover margin, second in the country. They’re the only team in American that has not committed a turnover.

The Gators lit up Hawaii in the opener but haven’t put major points on BCS teams Miami (26) and Tennessee (30) the last two weeks. That will change Saturday if Ole Miss turns the ball over four or five times. Then it gets ugly.

Some are looking at the Gators’ un-Florida-like offensive statistics and finding a measure of hope. They shouldn’t. Tim Tebow is still Tim Tebow, and Percy Harvin is still Percy Harvin. They have shown what they can do. Perhaps game situations have dictated a different approach for Florida, but I don’t believe these players have forgotten how to play.

Ole Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix theorizes that the Gators’ stats are down a bit, because the turnovers their defense has forced has given them a short field, and they’ve scored two touchdowns on punt returns.

There’s some truth in there.

Ole Miss has proven itself to be a pretty good offensive football team when it doesn’t give away the football.

Florida, however, has held Miami and Tennessee to a combined nine points the last two weeks. Those aren’t terrible offenses.

The guess here is that Ole Miss reduces but not eliminates its turnovers. The Rebels play a better offensive game but also get a touchdown from special teams for the third straight week.

Florida’s Brandon James doesn’t return a punt for a touchdown but does give the Gators a lift with field position.

The Gators will attempt to establish the run against Ole Miss’ defensive line but will eventually opt for the pass and will be successful finding enough open receivers to make a difference.

Florida 32, Ole Miss 17

I know I’m being a homer about this. I say the Rebs play smart football, do not commit any turnovers and pull off the upset of the week.

Glad to know some Rebel fans are still drinking the cool aid. I’m not that optimistic. 38-14 Florida.

  7. cr Says:

    Florida will blitz a lot.

Rebel offense changes passing game approach because Vandy seemed to know where we were going with the ball.

Tebow won’t run as much as last year.

We turn it over more than Florida but improve.

  8. Jay Stokes Says:

i can’t agree with any of the “upset” crowd above….i’d love to, but i can’t. i also can’t agree with john above. come on, john….are you serious? when was the last time you saw an SEC conference game end in a score like that? ole miss has covered the spread the last four games against the gators….and i think they’ll do the same here.

i think they play better on offense. i think wallace catches a deep ball (crossed fingers). i think they commit one turnover in the game. like PA said, the gators have success passing the ball more so than running the ball. ole miss keeps it close through a half, but respectable throughout.

    Ole Miss……….24
    Florida………….35

  9. djrebel Says:

John, sounds like you’re still stinging from Vanderbilt. Think the Rebels got better at all in practice this week?

Ole Miss commits 1 turnover and Florida commits 2.
    Ole Miss – 24

This is not really a prediction, just wishful thinking.
I do think it will be closer than people think.

“john….are you serious? when was the last time you saw an SEC conference game end in a score like that?”

Allow a State fan to make a friendly reminder: The last few match-ups of my Bulldogs against LSU have been very close to that.

  13. Tyler-for-Heisman Says:

    FLA…………38
    Ole Miss…..14

    Two turnovers (1 INT)
James does return one back to the house.
We score early to make the game somewhat interesting in the first half and then again in the forth quarter when the game is already decided

  14. Bo Says:

    42-17 Gators.

    I’ll pray I’m wrong!

  15. Bruce Says:

We’ll keep it close for awhile, but UF has too many weapons and will pull away at the end:

    Florida 34, Ole Miss 13

  16. EglinReb Says:

UF commits 2 turnovers, Rebs none. Rebs shut down UF punt/KO return game. Tebow gets good stats, but Harvin disappears.

    Rebs 28 Gators 17

    You heard it here first

  17. farley662 Says:

And it will be the last time it’s heard.

  18. dstesports08 Says:

My brain tells me blowout, but my heart says close game like all the times before. Personally, this sounds bad, but I’d rather get beat bad then go through what we went through with Vandy and Wake Forest.

I’m going to go with my heart and say:

    Ole Miss 31
    Florida 30

Ole Miss is tied with Florida 24-24 with less than 2 left and Jevan drives down the field and sets up a Mike Wallace TD. 31-24. With less than a minute to go, Tebow drives the explosive Gator offense down the field and answers with a last second run in the endzone as the clock expires. However, Florida misses the XP and Ole Miss prevails.

  19. Raleighrebel Says:

Ole Miss goes into the 4th quarter down by three (27-24), then Florida finishes them off with two field goals in the 4th. Rebels have zero turnovers, Gators have two.

    Final Score:

    Gators 33
    Rebels 24

    Go Rebels!

  20. farley662 Says:

Guys, I admire your faith. I have no faith that State will hang around with LSU. If we only get beat by 28, I’ll consider that a moral victory.

  21. n.o.reb89 Says:

Bama 21 Georgia 17, Ole Miss 24 Florida 23, and sorry farley, LSU 35 State 0.

  22. JB Says:

    Rebels 31 Gators 28

  23. farley662 Says:

    Bama and OM??????

  24. n.o.reb89 Says:

When Bama wins, the LSU faithful really hate it and being an Ole miss fan in New Orleans, I need all the breaks I can get. on OM I really think that they will play better maybe not win but not lose big and on MSU, their offence is struggling and LSU defence is bad to the bone.

  25. Jimmy Barbee Says:

    Rebels 31 Gators 28

  26. L2 Says:

My heart doesn’t want to go this way BUT:
We hang around until Tebow starts pushing it up the gut in the 4th
    Urban Tebow’s: 30
    Good Guys: 21

  27. rebnutt Says:

    Gators 48
    Rebels 24

Let’s hope for no serious injuries, we don’t need to come out of this all banged up, so we can be ready for SC (who plays UAB this weekend?)

  28. RebelGiant Says:

Both my head and heart know that FL will score enough (24 pts) by half time for the W.

    Highlights:
Powe levels Tebow, causing a fumble. The one and only FL TO for the game.

    Gators 38
    Rebs 21

    BUT…
We will get our 6 wins – against SC, Ark, ULM, and MSU

  29. RoastBeef1 Says:

JB, you criticize farley and others for some of the stuff they post and put on seperate blogs, but yet you have a picture of a confederate flag as your image? It doesn’t offend me, but I’m sure it might offend others. Kinda hypocritical of you to bash people for what they do but yet you still post something as disgraceful as that flag.

  30. m4rebs Says:

Not as optimistic here. I think we play better, but our best game vs. Florida’s worst game still wouldn’t be enough. They could turn it over 6 times to our 2 and still win 23 -17, but it won’t be that close.

    Gators 45
    Rebs 20

  31. jwbreb Says:

Must be a great moral builder for the Rebel football team, should they read some of these posting by their fans, about how they are going to get slaughtered by the Florida Gators.

Wonder what the Sunday and Monday morning QB choirs will have to say. Their game plan how to replay this game will be amusing.

    Interesting!!!

  32. farley662 Says:

    Sent you an email JB.

  33. no_handle Says:

    Florida 42
    Ole Miss 17

No faith in Rebels having a good SEC road game. I would like to see a win like my one and only trip to the Swamp several years back. But, no repeat this time around. Tebow will have a big day against the Ole Miss secondary and will account for 4 of the 6 Florida touchdowns.

  34. Flareb Says:

    Gentlemen,
Some insight from the host state. I disagree with PA on the Gators playing two pretty good offenses. Hurricanes, (my other love) are awfully talented but extremely young. There athleticism kept them in the game but they were totally lost on offense. UM looked good vs A&M because they are atrocious. Fulmer is imploding at Tenn. Gator fans are concerned about there defense and if OM clicks they could expose what many feel is a questionable area of the team. Second, Gators always tend to play down to there competition. Third, which may not favor OM, Rebs have given them fits as of late and Gators know it. Gators always put alot into Tenn. game and that could go along way in determining the outcome. Hurricane defensive line gave Gators O-line problems all night and this is the one area where Rebs have advantage. I won’t predict a Reb victory but I think this game will be alot closer than what people think. I’ll take 22 1/2 and the Rebs, all day long. I like what I saw vs Wake on the road. Snead is the intangible. Hardy could have a big day. Nutt has also given Gators a run for there money in his matchups.
Maybe Rebs realize the fan base is fuming and come to Gville with something to prove. Every coach and program needs that signature win. All I ask is that you give it all you got. I’ll be in the swamp with an OM hat on and rooting my heart out as I always do.

Let me make this statement. My present avatar is in no way meant to offend anyone. I will continue to use it on occasions along with “make my day” Clint Eastwood painting as I feel like using them. These paintings are art work done by my deceased son Mike. As long as PA,Farley, and Brad don’t object to them, they will appear from time to time.

I see ole Col Rebs pic popping up from time to time and love it.

A good day to all. GO REBELS!!!beat them ole Bull Gators.

  37. jwbreb Says:

One other note of interest: My daughter is a night auditor at the Comfort Inn in Crestview. Last night some of the Ole Miss coaches(Phy Condt, etc) stopped by for the night on their way to Gainesville. Had long chat.

Lighten up JB. All its good man. It’s Friday, one day closer to some SEC football!!

    PA,
Will you be in the swamp?

  43. Bacchus815 Says:

    PA,
You should have taken the 7:30pm flight to Orlando last night. Could have grabbed an interview with Chris Warren who was sitting a couple rows in front of me — going home for the long weekend before practice starts, I guess.

  44. rebbacker Says:

Close game Ole Miss chokes at the end 24 UF 21 UM!!!

  45. farley662 Says:

I don’t think we will see another upset after last night. Every team in America was put on warning last night.

  46. RebelGiant Says:

    Hey jwbreb,

What is your avatar? I apologize, but I cant see it very well on my old computer.

This is a Navy LCAC type landing craft. Air Cushioned. It can travel over water and make landings on beaches, etc. Used for transporting Marines and their equipment from ship to on shored landings.

RebelGiant: Maybe us can pull up this site: http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/lcac.htm.

I worked the GPS and Radar IFF Transponder systems of this type craft when working at the Navy Base in Panama City, Fl, JB

  50. Jimmy Barbee Says:

RebelGiant : Changed avatar today from that Naval LCAC back to The Cross of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who made a sacrifice for sinners as me. Praise The Lord!!!

A great game today that the Rebels played.

A good job in that prediction dstesports08, you hit the nail squarely on the head in today’s game..
