BASEBALL: Smith off to fast start

The Rebels began their third week of fall baseball on Monday. First baseman Matt Smith has gotten off to a good start. He was hitting .450 as of Monday, but even more impressive is the fact that Smith had struck out only twice in 20 at-bats.

Smith hit .283 with 14 home runs last year but struck out 80 times in 226 at-bats or one strikeout for every 2.8 plate appearances.

Some of that had to do with adjusting to the middle of the order. He’d have probably been lower in the lineup if not for some injuries elsewhere.

Fall baseball goes through the first weekend in November.

Any idea how many Rebel baseball players will be returning for their senior year?
