FOOTBALL: Tuesday practice notes

Not much in the way of depth chart changes as Ole Miss continues preparation for a trip to Tuscaloosa Saturday.

Jonathan Cornell was running ahead of Tony Fein at middle linebacker, though Fein has 24 tackles to Cornell’s 10 in the last three games.

Ashlee Palmer and Allen Walker were the other first-team linebackers today. …

Ohio State transfer cornerback James Scott began practicing last week. He’ll have three years of eligibility remaining. Scott was a member of four special teams units as a true freshman with the Buckeyes and finished with six tackles and a fumble recovery. He was ranked as the nation’s No. 10 cornerback and the No. 11 overall recruit in the state of Florida two years ago. …

The Rebels go into the Alabama game in pretty good health with no player expected to miss playing time because of injury. …

I keep hearing that we’re going to see a whole lot more of Enrique very soon. If I’ve missed this in your columns or this blog, I’m sorry, but what do you hear or see from the practices? Hopefully, our coaches don’t forget that they have (reportedly many variations of) the screen pass in their playbook this Saturday–it’s absurd that they didn’t use it vs. SC.

Rebnutt, We are not allowed to watch the team part of practice where the offense and defense work against the scout teams. That’s the only way I’d know if Enrique was getting more reps with the regular offense and was getting ready to get in the game. I haven’t heard that he’s about to see a bigger role, but when you’re getting ready to face the No. 2 team, sometimes it’s good to spring a surprise.

Like you, I’d like to see the screen pass a little more.
