FOOTBALL: Predictions Anyone?

Greetings all.

This is late getting up with it being a basketball and travel day and whatnot.

But there is football to be played in Fayetteville Saturday night, and it’s a pretty important game for the Rebels.

Bowl hopes do not vanish if Ole Miss loses this game, but they further unravel.

Having lost four games by a total of 19 points, the Rebels have proven they can play with anyone on their schedule. They’ve not proven they can consistently close games against with which they’re considered a closer match – like Vanderbilt and South Carolina. Those close home losses may turn out to be haunting in the end if this Arkansas game slips through.

Statistically and talent-wise, Ole Miss is the better team here. But if the better team fumbles, stumbles and throws picks it can lose to a Razorbacks team that has shown improvement the last two weeks.

That Bobby Petrino passing offense really hasn’t taken off yet, but Houston Nutt left Petrino with Michael Smith, the SEC’s top rusher at 131.8 yards a game. Smith had a concussion in last week’s 21-20 loss at Kentucky. He missed a lot of practice this week but is expected to play. It doesn’t sound like he’ll carry 35 times – as he’s done in each of the last two games – but you never know.

Stopping the run is Ole Miss’ strong suit, and the Rebels will need to hone in on Smith or whoever runs in his place.

They also need pressure up front. Casey Dick isn’t an elite quarterback, but neither was South Carolina’s Chris Smelley. The Rebels didn’t get pressure on Smelley, and he picked a part the secondary with 330-some odd yards in a career outing. I don’t think he’s been heard from since, at least not much.

The Razorbacks are averaging 225.7 passing yards a game, third in the SEC. Dick has thrown six touchdown passes, but four of those came in the first two weeks against Western Illinois and La.-Monroe.

This isn’t a great offense, but it was good enough to put up 25 points at Auburn and get the first SEC win for the Razorbacks, which equals the number of SEC wins for Ole Miss at this point.

There have been murmurs that Nutt might change up the Wild Rebel some this week, but he and offensive coordinator Kent Austin have been adamant that Dexter McCluster will play through his fumbles and interceptions.

I’m going to say McCluster plays, but his touches are fewer. The Rebels play physical on both lines. They get the ground game going and limit the Hogs in Nutt’s return to his home state.

Maybe that will be the case, because in the quest for six wins and bowl eligibility this is a big one.

Ole Miss 25, Arkansas 19

Ole Miss finally throws some screen passes and puts pressure on Dick. Rebs 28. Hogs. 20

  2. Raleighrebel Says:

Snead throws for 300+ yards in this game, and rushes for 50. One turnover by Ole Miss (Snead, interception), but three by Arkansas. Ole Miss wins big.

    Rebels 36
    Hogs 17

    Other interesting games:

    Auburn 13 WVU 9
    FL 41 KY 17
    Duke 24 Vandy 27
    UGA 27 LSU 24
    MSU 10 MTSU 9
    AL 41 TN 20

  3. Jimmy Barbee Says:

Its very doubtful, but hopeful, that the Rebs will come out of Fayetteville with a win. Much more going on here that just a normal football game.

  4. matt Says:

If you look back at the season, the only games we’ve won are the ones when we’ve put up more than 30 points. Call me crazy but what makes you think this trend ends here?

  5. m4rebs Says:

Jimmy, you are crazy. How can you feel so sure about coming to Tuscaloosa to the #2 team in the country’s house and win, and now you go to a place where that same team you thought we’d beat, beat this team by 30 points, I just don’t get your logic sometimes.
Anyway, I agree with Jimmy. Our strong suit is stopping the Run. Their strong suit is slinging it, regardless of Smith’s 130plus per game. I think their pass has set up their lanes to run and folks are selling out against the pass instead of preping for the run against the Hogs. We, on the other hand, won’t have the opportunity to stop the run. We will stop them on MOST first and second downs, but will give up huge chunks on 3rd’s. I think their passing offense matches up well against our pass defense. I hope I’m wrong but I think the Razorbacks pull this one out:
    Arkansas 31
    Ole Miss 27

  6. rebnutt Says:

I would like to think our defense finally “got it” in the Bama game, and will be more consistent going forward. We really shouldn’t lose more than one more game, and it shouldn’t be Arkansas.
I project 30-plus from us on offense, with the defense holding them to under 20. Here’s hoping Enrique will follow up on his good run last Sat.
    Ole Miss 34
    Ark. 17

  7. oxfordrebel Says:

Arkansas has a bad defense, and a mediocre offense at best. We’ve shown improvement on stopping the run, but secondary is still weak. I think we throw the kitchen sink at Dick and keep him off balance. He’ll connect on some passes but our D-line keeps him honest. Lots of emotions running high here, but Nutt feeds off negative energy on the road seems like. He’ll have his Rebels to go and making the R-kansas hillfolk wishing they hadn’t ran him out of town. This will be a pretty entertaining game, and alot is riding on it for the Rebs. Turnovers keep it close:

    UM- 30
    AR- 24

M4. Emotional high for a game. Ole Miss went to Tuscaloosa on an emotional high to beat the #2 team in the nation, nothing to lose and all to gain, same down at Gainesville. Well this emotional high has got hold of the Razorback aiming not really at the Rebels, but Coach Nutt. I feel that they, team and fans, are out to spoil Coach Nutt’s return. Emotions deeply effect a person. In church when the singing starts, is the congregation on a spiritual high or a earthly high? When the preacher gets into his sermon and starts to really getting with it, is he on a spiritul filled emotion or a human felt emotion. I am not a holy roller, but have been to some churches that were very emotional lifted. Just makes one want to get into a dance and speak in tongues. M4, have you ever had an emotional attack as this? God Loves You and So do I. God Bless. Jimmy

PA, don’t know why the above posting repeated itself. Please delete one or both. I am on my Granddau computer and having problems with it.

  10. PBeez Says:

Jimmy, what’s the problem with her computer? Can’t you get the carbon paper out of it, or is the ribbon stuck? 😉

I wasn’t even sure who we were playing until today. I had to take a total mental break off both of my teams after last weekend (NCSU letting FSU get away thursday, and then our game).

So, on pure emotion, I think Ole Miss wins this one. This is not really based on any rational thought or analysis, its just what I want to think. I think the team is improving at every level, I think that we don’t suffer any real emotional damage from last week, and Arkansas emotional high backfires – its like a sugar rush.

  11. PBeez Says:

RaleighRebel – what Raleigh is that? NC?

  12. Raleighrebel Says:

    PBeez,

Yeah, I’ve lived in Raleigh for three years now. Originated from Pontotoc, MS. Originally graduated from Ole Miss in 1998. I had season tix to NCSU last year, however my girlfriend went to UNC, so we have season tickets to see the Tarheels. I’m not partial to either…just enjoy going to a football game and tailgating on Saturday. I’ve skipped a few to watch the Rebels play on Gameplan/CBS though.

  13. Jeff Jolly Says:

Rebels are on ESPN game plan this week. I sure am glad I bought that package. Otherwise, I would have to watch MSU-Middle Tn. or whoever they’re playing. I can’t believe that game was picked over the Reb Hog game.

  15. oxfordrebel Says:

farley, i get the feeling you’re wanting state to lose this weekend. Am I off base there?

  16. PBeez Says:

Ral-Reb, Raleigh sure is not Pontotoc! I went through the reverse process you’ve gotten to deal with. Grew up in Raleigh, right by campus/rose garden/little theater. All the folks in my neighborhood called it State College! I couldn’t afford my old neighborhood now! If you’ve never checked out the State Fair, its one of the best ones in the country.

Carolina games? Tailgating in Chapel Hell? You two pack whine and cheese for those? My best friend actually is there every home game at the Chi Psi house tailgating it up.

Its telling she is not dating a Carolina “man.” I think that’s an oxymoron. I can understand not having a strong loyalty in football, but surely in basketball you’ve been hooked. I won’t ask by whom, because State has stunk for several years.

  17. farley662 Says:

    Never! How dare you?

  18. bornarebel Says:

    Ole Miss – 31
    Pigs – 17

  19. Raleighrebel Says:

    Pbeez,

NCSU actually has decent tailgating up here. Definitely nothing like the experience at Ole Miss, but nothing to be ashamed of. I work for an accounting firm up here, and it is about 50/50 between NC State and UNC alums, with a few Hokies, a Rebel, and a Texas Tech girl mixed within. I took five guys I used to tailgate with at the NC State games down to the Ole Miss vs. GA game a couple of years ago, and they had a blast. I’ll admit the tailgating experience is scarce up here, but do okay by parking our cars in the upper level of Keegan and bring a keg of the good stuff to sip on before the game. UNC fans are funny up here. They have a great baseball team and a very up and coming football team, but its all ‘Basketball, Basketball, Basketball’ to these guys. I’ve heard the fair is a good time, but I still haven’t made it yet.

Farley you really think Middle beats the Dogs?

Hey guys, some of you may have already seen this, but son Kyle pointed out to me that the Ole Miss-Arkansas game can be viewed on ESPN360.com. We’ve enjoyed that site at my house.

  22. Jaxrebsteve Says:

I have a bad feeling about this one. We just can’t seem to stop the turnovers.

    Hogs 31
Rebs 21 (with way more yards, but 5 turnovers)

    I hope I’m wrong

  23. kylebuddy Says:

Rebels come out and win big in the “Hog Pound.”

    Ole Miss 41

    Arkansas 28

This win helps OM get to a bowl game, cause they beat Mstate and NL Monroe.
