FOOTBALL: Nutt says no contact, not interested

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt says he hasn’t been contacted by Clemson, knows nothing about the job and isn’t interested. There’s a random reference to Nutt regarding the Clemson opening in this blog by ESPN’s Bruce Feldman of the “Meat Market” book and Ed Orgeron fame.

While the Clemson job has some appeal (big stadium, nice tradition, easier conf to win in)… I’m not sure why Nutt would walk away from Ole Miss where we a solid group of starters returning next year and we are in the premiere football conf with good facilities, solid commitment. Plus he just got his kids to transfer to Ole Miss, etc. And expectations are out of whack at Clemson and they are in the shadow of Georgia and Tennessee… just my thoughts.

Nice to have a coach someone else wants.

John, I agree. Lots of logic there, which makes the argument kind of scary. I honestly don’t see Nutt leaving for Clemson, but I’ve seen too much in the way of coaching turnover to discount it completely. Lots of good reasons for Nutt to stay at Ole Miss, but if Clemson started throwing around Alabama money you never know what might happen.

He mentioned that Nutt may not be getting along with Pete Boone. Who does get along with Pete Boone???? No one.

I can see Tommy T replacing Tommy B before HDN makes the move.

  6. djrebel Says:

I thought Tommy was pretty vanilla Saturday. Didn’t seem to do anything to shake up the offense, no trick plays, riverboat gambler or anything like that, and seemed uninterested in his remaining time at field position at the end of the first half.

I heard a rumor on Friday from a guy who tends to be right a lot of the time that Tubby had already been canned and was headed to Clemson, they just haven’t announced anything. I wonder exactly when Nutt was contacted.

  8. UMLaw Says:

Strike that last bit, seeing where he hasn’t been contacted.

  9. Stuck in Bham Says:

Reminds me of the last half of his last season in Oxford. Fat Phil at Tennessee is the same way.

Until they hire someone else, in todays landscape of college football, no one is a lock where they are. Well, except for Crxxm.

  11. Mooch Says:

PA, I tought the same thing at the end of the half. We(in the stands) were even talking that if he had positioned for at least FG at the end of the half combined with the 3rd Qtr TD we start the 4th tied at 10-10, who knows what happens at that point. Didn’t Aub end the 1st half with 2 timeouts?

  12. L2 Says:

Just curious – Heard from a guy in the Knoxville area before it came out that Phat Phil resigned today that Houston was on the short list there. It is being talked on radio & rumorville in that area. Just curious on anyone else who might have heard anything from up that way??

  13. Tyler-for-Heisman Says:

I know auburn ran the clock down to about three seconds before they snapped the ball at the end of the first half just to throw a short dump-type pass. I didn’t undersatnd that. I also thought if they had made more of an effort to pass sat. then things could have been a lot different. Maybe they have quit, like Dye said.

  14. farley662 Says:

Off subject here, but do any of you guys know of any hunting land in or around Oxford?

  15. djrebel Says:

Haven’t heard Houston and Tennessee. I’m not surprised he’s on anyone’s list. First name I heard for Tennessee was Mike Leach.

I don’t know if there’s any truth to it, but ESPN seems to think that Lane Kiffin is the front-runner. That would be an interesting choice.

  17. L2 Says:

Thanks guys – Kiffin & Leach are the names I heard being thrown around……long way to go though. Just makes you skiddish when the coaching craziness gets started.

  18. RebelGiant Says:

What about Jon Gruden at UT? Anybody heard that one?

  19. JB Says:

Coach Nutt building a good football program/system at Ole Miss, just why would he care to leave for elsewhere? Coach O did not leave the system without.

  21. John Mc Says:

I was wondering….why did they not play the Elvis “Dixie” video at the end of the Aurburn game. I know it’s not a big deal, but we were all looking forward to it, especially after a win. Another short-lived tradition? What’s up?

  22. bigdraws Says:

John, somebody obviously informed Om that the video also contains “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Which is a direct contradiction to being a Rebel. Colonel Reb was prolly about ready to secede again after yesterdays election.
