HOOPS: Kennedy’s postgame

Here’s what Andy Kennedy had to say following the basketball Rebels’ 82-78 win over Marshall Sunday. Long way to go with this team, but there’s talent to work with. Could be an ugly non-conference season.

Nice to see Marshall held to 40 percent field goal shooting, but post play has got to get better. Right now its not contributing shooting percentage, scoring or enough rebounding.

No surprise to see Terrico White crack the lineup. He does rebound and had five to go along with six points in 20 minutes. Maybe his wrist isn’t hurt too bad.

On the game:
“We knew it would be a hard-fought game. I hope our team
learned some things. We play so many freshmen, they’re
still learning. I hope we can take some things from this
game and improve. I’m proud of them for grinding it out
and coming through with the win.”

On pulling out a close win:
“I think until they’re in a pressure-paced situation
like tonight, you don’t know how they’re going to
respond. It is an incredible learning opportunity for our
new guys. We needed veterans like Chris (Warren) and David
(Huertas) to step up, and that’s what they did.”

On being out-rebounded:
“We had a hard time on the glass. We were just a step late
all night. Marshall had a junior and senior on their front
line. Markel Humphrey is an all-league type player. They
went to the glass with a sense of urgency that you expect
when you’ve lost two straight games. We knew with our
young guys that we would be vulnerable down low, but I
didn’t expect it to be this dry. We need to have some guys
step up on our front line. We’ve got to keep working. In
the second half we were better defensively, but we still
need to do a better job on the defensive boards.”

On the team’s overall youth:
“It’s a work in progress. These young guys, they were in
high school at this time last year. They had never seen a
scouting report, they hadn’t been through the day-in,
day-out grind. I’m proud of getting this win, and I hope
our young guys can learn from it.”

On the upcoming week of home games:
“We have two huge games this week, Central Florida on
Wednesday and Morgan State on Saturday. Hopefully it will be
good to be back in the friendly confines (of Tad Smith
Coliseum). We need lots of people to come out and support
us.”

Well, I did go down to the Utah game in Daytona before I headed up here to Gatlinburg. We have plenty of options on offense. That’s the good news. With the young big men,we seemed to be protecting them by doubling down a lot on the post, not just their 7-2 guy, but most of the time. This left their outside shooters open and Utah’s were deadly.
The problem is we don’t seem to have a good zone defense and playing man and doubling the post men means we will have problems with good inside out teams. The coaches are doing a lot of experimenting with combinations of players and can’t seem to find quite what they want right now.
Every one of them plays hard and tries to get their teammates involved. We will have to rely on the offense to out score teams this year. Good to see the Ole Miss fans in Daytona. Hotty Toddy.
