FOOTBALL: Mike Wallace interview

Here’s a little bit from WR Mike Wallace as we talked to players yesterday in leading up to the Mississippi State game.

— PA
(On Kent Austin’s contributions as offensive coordinator)
Coach Austin been a coordinator for years in the Canadian league, and coach Nutt been a head coach, and when they bring their two offenses together, then have lot of things, … the post and corner patterns, the crossing patterns, and coach Nutt likes the Wild Rebel package. We come from a lot of different angles, and I think we’re a dangerous team right now.

(What do you see happening Friday?)
I believe we’ll go out and execute. From last year we believe that we owe them, and we do feel like we’re the better team. I believe we let one get away from us last year, and we just have to come out and execute our game plan this year, and I believe we’ll come out on top. We want to stay focused on winning this game and getting a better bowl bid if possible.

(On fourth-and-1 last year)

It was a make or break call. Maybe I would have made that call in that situation. Your team should be able to get 1 yard, and that’s how he felt, his team could get a yard. Unfortunately it didn’t come out in our favor.

It was kind of embarrassing for us to be winning the game and then lose it at the end like that.

Even though it happened for us, and it was a hard time, I believe everything happened for the best. I like the situation we’re in now. He’s where he is, and we’re where we are. Everything worked out for everybody. I really happy with the change. I really like our new coaches and everybody.

PA, I’ve been impressed with the answers that you have gotten from several of the OM players during these interviews, and these from Wallace are a good example. I see, and I don’t think that it’s just wishful thinking, a degree of maturity and thoughtfulness that is encouraging.

    Do you agree?

JH, I think you’re on the mark. Lots of people stereotype athletes as unintelligent or uninterested in anything outside their realm. Most of the time I don’t find that to be true. However, some guys are naturally more verbal than others. Those players make for good interviews, and those are the guys we tend to gravitate to most often.

Hey Vaught you got an extra ticket? Nevermind, I don’t want you to have to dodge flying whiskey bottles.

    “Hey Vaught ”

Meant hey Ripley. Just shows you in what high reguard I hold you my friend.

Will do….hope you get to hear a bowl announcement in the locker room. I look for the Cotton Bowl to offer after the game if our Rebs win to put pressure on the Rebs to accept before the outcome of the other SEC games are known.

Thanks Draws . That is quite a compliment. Or is it that I’m very old too???
