HOOPS: UCF game thread

We’re about seven minutes from the tip. Not much of a home crowd advantage tonight. This is a tougher opponent than you want to have the night before Thanksgiving.

We’ve got an early print deadline at the Journal tonight, so if I trail off at the end of the game I’m handling print chores.

Jermey Parnell is sitting on the front row of a near-vacant student section. A bunch of football players over there, but most of them are sitting up a little higher.

  2. djrebel Says:

DeAundre Cranston, Malcolm White, Terrico White, David Huertas and Chris Warren in the Ole Miss starting five.

  3. djrebel Says:

Rebels get a 3 from Huertas for the game’s first points. UCF has scored 10 straight now, including a pair of 3-pointers from Taylor, and Ole Miss calls time out at 17:20.

  4. djrebel Says:

A foul by M White, a missed 3 by Huertas when he might have been fouled, and a turnover by Terrance Henry. It’s 12-3 UCF at 15:47.

  5. djrebel Says:

Couple of problems here. There’s no Polynice and that absence of defense can’t be overstated. The post play is young and inexperienced, and it really shows.

We were told about a great off-season by Malcolm White, but he’s really looking average in the early part of the season.

These guys are all over Huertas tonight not letting him get anything.

    UCF 18-10 at 12:08

  6. m4rebs Says:

Chris Warren better step up. Huertas has shown he can’t carry by himself.

  7. djrebel Says:

Warren had his best shooting game the last time out, but he’s only take one or two so far tonight.

  8. djrebel Says:

Rebels have looked good on several trips in a zone defense but can’t find a bucket. Graham gets mugged in the lane, then the Knights score in transition, and it’s 20-11 at 7:57. UCF ball when play resumes.

  9. djrebel Says:

Kevin Holman, our orthodontist, refuses to participate on the Kiss Cam it looks like.

  10. djrebel Says:

THis team was going to need one of the post freshmen to play like Warren did last year — as in ahead of his age. Nobody’s doing that, and it’s a reminder of how special Warren was last year. Holloway appears to be ahead of the rest right now.

I’ts ugly at the 5:40 mark. UCF 24-12.

  11. djrebel Says:

UCF 26-18 with a time out at 3:27

  12. djrebel Says:

Matt, where are you man? One comment and you’re back to the turkey.

  13. djrebel Says:

Rebels on an 8-2. T White with a rebound near the key goes the distance. It’s UCF 26-22 at 2:06.

  14. djrebel Says:

Rebels close on a 15-2 run. Zone defense gave UCF some problems. A Huertas transition basket gives Ole Miss a 27-26 lead, and that’s where it stands at the half.

  15. djrebel Says:

They just showed a nice football highlight video on the big board. Lots of good action from the season but mostly the 4-game win streak. Houston and his wife and son are sitting over on the other side of the floor.

  16. m4rebs Says:

Still here, kids still awake. We are in the lead still? 15-2 runs are good things, huh PA?

  17. djrebel Says:

UCF got its first bucket since the 5:21 mark of the first half when it scored with 17:24 left in the game. Nice defensive run for the Rebels.

Huertas has 5 points this half, and Terrico White has a 3. Rebels up 37-30 at 15:54.

  18. djrebel Says:

Graham, Warren with back-to-back 3s. Rebels up 49-35 with 11:29 left.

It’s a very spirited defensive effort tonight. UCF isn’t trying to pound it down into the post, and Ole Miss is going to have trouble with teams that do that well.

Rebels shot 27 percent in the first half but they’re up to 36 percent now.

  19. djrebel Says:

Holloway is putting on a nice show right now. Inn the last 2 minutes he’s forced a turnover in the zone press, scored on a drive to the basket and passed to Cranston low for an assists.

Rebels lead 55-35 at 7:45. I’ve got to do print stuff. Matt, if you’re still around, post a final for me.

  20. m4rebs Says:

Ok, we’ll do. I’m still here PA. 7:32 to go, Rebs up 20.

  21. m4rebs Says:

With 6 minutes left in the game, Rebs up 61-37.

  22. m4rebs Says:

Rebs making a push for a 30 point win…..after a terrible first half shooting the basketball, they’ve definetely found the stroke in the second.

  23. m4rebs Says:

Knights have it down to 26 with 3 and some change.

  24. m4rebs Says:

Rebs make another mini-run. Up 75-42 with 2 minutes to go.

  25. m4rebs Says:

Huertas shoots Rebs past UCF Knights in Tad Pad.
Ole Miss 78 Central Florida Knights of CUSA 46

Ole Miss shoots 67% from the floor in the second half, including 67% from beyond the 3-point line, outscoring UCF 51 to 20 in the second half. It appearred to be a rough outing early for the wounded Rebels, as they made their return to the Tad Smith Coliseum after a weekend in Daytona Beach, where the Rebs suffered their first loss of the season to the Utah Utes. It appearred they may have been in for their second loss in the last 7 days after Eniel Polyneice suffered a season-ending injury. The Rebels trailed early and often, but pulled it together to make a quick run before the intermission and stole the lead away from the visiting Knights from Orlando, 27-26. It was then the David Huertas show, as he barried the UCF defense with a 3-point barrage in the second half to overwhelm the Knights. The Ole Miss defense picked it up in the second half as the Knights struggled to score with a pencil….only shooting 25% in the second half after putting up a solid 36% in the first half. The Knights finished the night with nearly as many turnovers, with 17 as field goals (19). It was definetly a tale of 2 halves in the Tad Smith Colisiem on Thanskgiving Eve.

Went to the game tonight and the Rebs looked decent. Nothing really sticks out to me as impressive besides their athleticism. Luckily the SEC sucks this year so maybe they can make a NCAA tourney run.

And to give you guys that weren’t there an idea of the croud, it was probably about half full. The funny thing about it tonight was that the loudest the crowd ever got was during football references and the highlight tape they played at half time.

  27. djrebel Says:

Thanks Matt. Excellent job. I thought the Rebels played some good defense tonight.

Beef, there is a lot of athleticism. Hopefully Cranston can continue to improve. Someone has to show a pulse in the post, and he did tonight. Maybe it’s a starting point.

I like Murphy Holloway. He does a lot of good things, but as Kennedy pointed out tonight, while he looks good from the stands sometimes he’s out of position.

“Yeah he can find the ball, but he can lose his man. When we’re in zone he’s in man, or when we’re in man he’s in zone.”

He’ll come around. I figure the others will too. Right now Holloway just looks ahead of the other freshmen.
