FOOTBALL: Paying Nutt

Ole Miss athletics director Pete Boone told me yesterday there is no current plan to restructure Houston Nutt’s contract with a pay increase, though he didn’t rule it out. Nutt made $1.7 million this year and isn’t scheduled to make $2 million until 2011.

“We’d have to sit down and talk about that. It’s just a year old, and everything seems to be going according to what we’d hoped and anticipated,” Boone said.

Sometimes plans change. Boone has talked about the “price of poker” as it relates to the expense of trying to be competitive in major college athletics. If Mississippi State pays $2 million to its next football coach the price of poker increases.

Ole Miss has a good thing going with Nutt and his staff right now and will work to keep him, I’m sure.

I love how Mr. Boone acts likes it would be taking money out of his pocket to EVEN consider a pay raise. That dude is tight as a banjo string. Dickey Scruggs isn’t spending his money right now, the State is paying for all of his meals, we don’t have anything to worry about. We need to pay Coach Nutt & keep some consistency in Oxford. That will equate to success going forward and generate more than enough money to overcome the increase in Nutt’s pay.

I’m going to play devil’s advocate on this one.

I LOVE what Nutt has done for us this year. He did a phenomenal job. With that said, he already makes a LOT of money. One of my biggest concerns is that we seem to reward coaches each year. If you give a good coach a raise every successful year, it won’t be long before we have to pay our coach $5 million per year. As much as I hate to admit this, Ole Miss cannot compete with this mentality. LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, USC will ALWAYS have more money to spend than we do. If we try to beat them in the money game, we’ll lose.

Let Nutt fulfill his 4 year contract, and if it’s deemed worthy, we can give him another 4 year contract worth more money, but don’t give him a new, richer contract every year.

Once again, I LOVE what Nutt has done for the program, but I just don’t think he should get a raise each year. He’s already getting a $100,000 raise each year. That’s more than double the national average household income, not to mention the $1.7 million before it.

Texas A&M is known for paying extraordinarily well, especially for assistant coaches, and look where they are. Once again, we’ll NEVER be able to pay as much as Bama or Florida, so if one of those types of schools wanted Nutt and he wanted to go, he’d be gone. Even if we were able to match a $3.5 million per year contract, Nutt knows he could get better athletes and have a chance to win a national title at Florida or Bama or whatever.

Another pet peeve I have is that we give coaches extensions after extensions and then have to pay for their buyout when we fire them. Paying for buyouts and for new more expensive contracts is killing college football, b/c the money is just getting flat-out insane! Tennessee and Auburn are having to pay $6 million to coaches they FIRED. So that’s $12 million to NOT work there anymore, and then they’ll pay multi-million dollar deals to their new coaches. It’s a vicious cycle and it’s getting out of control….

bo i somewhat agree with you. there is such a thing as honor ,integrity, and loyalty. coach nutt signed a contract for four years and should honor that contract as should ole miss. hense the honor and integrity. he was run out of arkansas and welcomed warmly by ole miss and our fans. hense the loyalty. but to quote the popular phrase,”it is what it is”. and like boone said the price of poker sometime goes up and you have to decide if you want to be a player or a spectator.

If Mississippi State pays $2 million to its next football coach they are wasting their money. Don’t think there’s a coach out there that can produce a consistent winner at Miss State.

As for Coach Nutt and his already success at Ole Miss, after the Rebs win the Cotton Bowl he should get a sizable bonus and pay increase.

Jimmy- add a Top 20 recruiting class to the conditions for a pay increase. Just looking to the future.

A pay raise for Nutt would be cheap compared to the negative publicity that would come with losing him to Auburn.
