New MSU coach Dan Mullen was recruiting Tupelo wideout/all-purpose guy Chad Bumphis for Florida just days ago. The natural thinking is that Mullen’s hire immediately puts State in the running to sign this talented athlete.
We haven’t been able to reach Bumphis to ask that question. He’s been pretty coy during the process anyway.
Here’s a dose of unconfirmed recruiting speculation. One website recruiting writer posted a quote attributed to Bumphis through MSU commit QB Tyler Russell in which Bumphis allegedly said, “Looks like we’re going to be teammates.” Bumphis and Russell are in Mobile preparing for the Mississippi-Alabama all-star game.
It may end up that way. For a long time the only schools I heard from Tupelo High people on the subject of Bumphis’ recruiting were Alabama and Florida. Then last week I heard that Ole Miss had gotten back in the picture. Not surprising given the Rebels finish.
Bumphis would be a natural in the Wild Rebel and would give Ole Miss a passing threat from that formation that doesn’t currently exist.
I don’t think the Wild Rebel itself is enough to lure Bumphis. Lots of teams are running that formation on some level now. I imagine there will be some “Wild Dog” in Starkville next season.
