FOOTBALL: Sunday Cotton notebook

Seems like we just got here, but we’ve entered the phase of limited practice access.

Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt addressed media after practice, praising the weather and the scout team. Less wind today and lots of sunshine.

It’s been hard finding reserve players to simulate Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree, but Nutt like the looks the scout team was giving today.

“They came with a tremendous attitude, and you’ve got to have those guys. They know they’re not going to play, but they’re the Kodak team. They’ve got to give a picture for our team, and they did a beautiful job today on both sides of the ball.”

Nutt said his regular responded with less rust and more efficiency than they showed in Saturday’s initial Dallas workout.

Kentrell Lockett (shown above), Peria Jerry, Jamarca Sanford, Marcus Tillman and Jonathan Cornell joined defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix at a 3 p.m. news conference.

There is no planned bowl activity this evening. Players will visit a local children’s hospital tomorrow and will see the NHL’s Dallas Stars tomorrow night.

When u say scout team, do you mean the recruits that Ole Miss got? Did Houston mention that they weren’t rusty today?

  2. rebnutt Says:

Who’s playing the Crabtree role on our scout team–is it Melvin Smith? Also, who’s the scout QB?

  3. djrebel Says:

Rebnutt, Scout QB is Nathan Stanley, and he’s been giving good looks all year. I think it’s Melvin Harris playing Crabtree, but I’m not sure.

Kylebuddy, yes, the scout team is made up of recruits who did not play this season. Houston did say the Rebels weren’t as rusty today, and yes, I think Texas Tech is ready. Did you get your jersey out of the cleaners yesterday?

What a great experience for these guys. They’ll never forget these few days in Dallas. You sure don’t want to go down in history as the last team to lose at Cotton Bowl Stadium. I hope these guys have their gameface on come Fri. PA, is the DJ springing for you to stay at the Hyatt? I looked and those rooms are going for $325 a night.

  5. Mike Says:

    Colorado, found a room yet?

  6. ColoradoReb Says:

Mike, short answer, not yet. I am going to call the Hyatt and give them a good story on and see if I can pick up a reg. rate of $129 but if not, I’ll stay accross the street for $140. I think its called the hotel lawrence (3star). Both of these hotels are near the Dart Station which is a must for moving around. It sure wouldn’t hurt me to walk a little of this Christmas off though.

  7. ColoradoReb Says:

Maybe Pa can help me get a media rate? I need to pick up those field passes from him anyway.

I think that we will see a big ground attack by the Rebels against the Red Raiders and not try to shoot it out with them. The Ole Miss offensive line one of the best and I believe that they can take care of business. Using the game clock to the Rebs advantage therefore keeping that explosive air attack of the Red Raiders on the bench.

Take no thought of my thinking, it always 180 deg form what actual happens. Just my 2 cents worth.

  9. ColoradoReb Says:

I agree JB, we need to play our ball game not theirs. I think your going to have to be successful on the ground and by that I mean we’re gonna have to score alot on the ground. There is no doubt they can be explosive through the air in a hurry. Getting to the QB early and often will definately get in his head. I hope we get to see a good trick play or two from Kent and the O or maybe special teams.

  10. djrebel Says:

Colorado Reb, media rate is pretty sweet here at $95. Cotton Bowl does it up right for us.

Can you hook a brother up?

  12. m4rebs Says:

There is a New Year’s Eve deal hosted by the Dallas Ole Miss Alumni Chapter. If you go to their Website, it shows it. It is pretty expensive though.

  13. m4rebs Says:

PA, you were talking about recruiting and that Nutt doesn’t get the stars like Ed did. But you also made another good point…..Nutt has a plan with the younger guys, and Ed DID NOT. Cordera Eason has had 2 years of wasted time before this year, and he still hasn’t been redshirted for reasons unknown to me. That isn’t the only talent that he pissed away in my opinion due to lack of having a plan. That is the absolute biggest difference between last year and this year, we have a plan, period. I think we were flying by the seat of our pants as a program for the past 3 years.

  14. ColoradoReb Says:

Tickets are $25 bucks unless you know a sports reporter from the DJ, then they are free.

  15. ColoradoReb Says:

PA, you still here? Hope you didn’t drink too much Texas Tea for dinner.

  16. JakeFuryReb Says:

I think if UM listens to Let It Rock by Kevin Rudolph when they enter the stadium Friday, that’ll get the crowd into it.

  17. djrebel Says:

Colorado Reb, I only do sweet tea and too much of that. Let me know when you can send me those free tickets.

Matt, I do see a plan in place. Obviously everybody wants to get the best talent, and if the kid happens to have four stars by his name so be it. I think Nutt will get a few high profile signees, and they may not come in the most conventional manner. He’s getting Jamar Hornsby, because he’s giving the kid a second chance. He picked up a cornerback, James Scott, by way of transfer from Ohio State. He picked up Enrique Davis last year after a change of offensive philosophy at Auburn.

Along the way he’s going to get good, high school players who will respond to coaching. That is his plan.
