This comes from Ole Miss media relations.

HOUSTON — Just a couple weeks after his historic victory at the AT&T Cotton Bowl, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt will return to the state of Texas as a finalist for the Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year award. The winner will be announced Thursday, Jan. 15 at an awards dinner benefiting the American Heart Association at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Houston.

The eight finalists were selected by a committee consisting of current and past event chairmen, Bryant family representatives, NSSA representatives, college football sports analysts and former collegiate players and coaches. The winner is voted on by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA).

The Bryant College Football Coach of the Year is the only college coaching award given after all the bowl games have finished. Other finalists include Mack Brown, Texas; Turner Gill, Buffalo; Mike Leach, Texas Tech; Chris Petersen, Boise State; Nick Saban, Alabama; Bob Stoops, Oklahoma and Kyle Whittingham, Utah.

I say the top three should be Turner Gill, Houston Nutt, and Kyle Whittingham. Buffalo, Utah, and Ole Miss didn’t have the expectations that the others had. My guess for the winner will be Turner Gill. I love Nutt though!

  2. Charles Says:

Gotta be Nutt or Whittingham. Gill didn’t win his bowl game, so that would hurt his chances it would seem.

In other news, I decided to predict next year in the SEC:

SEC Best of the West: Ole Miss or Alabama
SEC Beast of the East: Florida
SEC Championship Game: Florida vs. Ole Miss

    Surprise Team: Mississippi State
    Cell-Dwellers: Auburn, Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee

My vote would be Whittingham. Only undefeated team in the country. I wouldn’t mind if Nutt won though.

Turner Gill seems to be a good coach, but after the terrible performance Buffalo showed against U Conn, I don’t see him deserving this. All of their points came from their defense capitalizing on some stupid errors U Conn made in the first half. Plus, Ball State proved to be a way overrated team in the bowl game, making that win for Buffalo a lot less than originally thought.

I think Arkansas is on the rise. They will be dangerous next year. The year after that they should be contenders for the West. They have a ton of young guys this year and have a good QB transfer in Mallet who is eligible next year.

I wonder if Coach Nutt will stay at Ole Miss. I think he would go to LSU if that job comes up. Prove me wrong Coach Nutt. When Saban left he chose Nutt as his replacement. Every person who are LSU fans were outraged I live in BR and that is true. If you OM for LSU it will get you rich but not fullfill you as a coach. LSU challenges Les Miles and they hated Jamarcus Russell. They are like Bama fans. They will crucify you when you have any downturn. I wonder if Tommy Tuberville regrets leaving in a pine box. It certainly affected Duece Mc

ark wont be the same, petrino will leave when the next job comes a calling

  8. HerbieT Says:

there’s an award given by the bryant family for coach of the year and the alabama coach is on the list? wonder who wins that one!?!

  9. ColoradoReb Says:

Its a free vacation. Don’t ever turn down anything free. “Its good to be king.”

  10. oxfordrebel Says:

Whittingham is your winner, the media has played that whole Sugar Bowl fiasco up so much that he has to be.

  11. nwrman Says:

Don’t look for Ark to run the ball next year, Petrino history is that of pass first and he was using Nutts people this year. I agrre with Jakefurry, Ark will be a cellar dweller.
