HOOPS: Florida game thread

After much bumbling, stumbling and misadventures not uncommon to sports travel we have determined how to enter the building, whether we’re seeing an “S” or a “5” in the hand-written wireless password and how to connect the plugs for court-side electricity.

We have overcome our obstacles and now check in live from the O’Connell Center, which is beginning to get crowded with fans reveling in a football national championship.

Gorgeous day outside in Gainesville. Temps in the upper 70s and lots of sunshine. Saw a couple of sand volleyball games on the way in, and the water parks were going on International Drive in Orlando when we checked into the hotel.

TIpoff between the Rebels and Gators is in about 40 minutes. I’ll post comments below. Post yours too.

Plenty of good seats still available here. I see two of the three injured Ole Miss players whose presence could drastically impact the Rebels for the better, but they won’t be back this year.

Eniel Polynice, a Florida native, and Trevor Gaskins is here. Who I don’t see is Chris Warren, the point guard and Orlando native, who is scheduled for surgery this week.

Warren tore his ACL Dec. 18 in Cincinnati.

There are banners all over the gym here honoring basketball and all types of sports, but I don’t see any that signifiy the Gators’ two national championships.

    I’ll keep looking.

Getting ready to tip here. Got a little anti-Huertas smack with a poster going on in the student section. Huertas began his career here but transferred for more playing time.

In light of the injuries, he’s the Rebels’ lone serious scoring threat these days. They’re trying to change that.

Billy Donovan and Andy Kennedy are shaking hands in front of the Ole Miss bench. Donovan comes up to just below Kennedy’s nose. Billy should have shaken hands with Mike, whose last name escapes me, of the Ole Miss training staff. Billy wins that matchup.

Holloway, Malcolm White, Bogan, Graham and Huertas — who is booed lustily — are the Ole Miss starters.

  5. djrebel Says:

Timeout at 15:02. Florida leads 14-12. Six points for Graham who has gotten loose in the lane a few times forcing Florida into a zone. The Gators have hit three 3-pointers to none for Ole Miss.

Huertas took the Rebels first shot and air-balled a 3 attempt from the key. He hasn’t shot again, but his teammates have got some decent looks.

Spirited defense by the Rebels so far, though they’re not getting out on those 3-balls.

  6. djrebel Says:

Huertas was just fouled on a 3 with 1 second on the shot clock. He missed 2 of 3 free throws and appears bothered in this, his first trip back to Gainesville.

  7. djrebel Says:

Gators on a 7-1 run up 24-13 at 12:10. More injury news. Malcolm White just went to the floor grabbing his ankle in obvious pain. More on that as it becomes available. Rebels are throwing up air balls all over the place.

  8. djrebel Says:

Time out at 11:14. Terrico White scored with an athletic put-back and Florida leads 24-15. Malcolm White is in the locker room.

Being an Ole Miss basketball player isn’t good for your health these days. Who’s next?

  9. djrebel Says:

Another 3 for the Gators. That’s six, and they’re pretty good and open looks. Florida leads 32-18 at 9:49.

Malcolm White has walked back to the Ole Miss bench.

  10. djrebel Says:

Bogan is on the bench with three fouls. Huertas and White will run the point, mostly White.

  11. djrebel Says:

Malcolm White is back in the game. Gators up 38-21 at 8:55.

  12. djrebel Says:

Calathes just hit the Gators’ seven 3-pointer, and it’s 41-23 at 7:43. The Gators appear a step better than Nicholls State last Saturday.

Zach Graham is getting a little done on the offensive end. He’ll be at the free throw line when play resumes. In these days of few offensive options, Graham’s 1-on-1 ability is important.

  13. ColoradoReb Says:

This is ugly!!! OM needs to practice shooting especially from the line. This is totally embarassing.

  14. djrebel Says:

Time out at 3:16. Gators are halfway to a hundred after a steal and basket by Calathes. He was fouled by Graham and will be at the free throw line when play resumes.

Rebels had cut a 21-point lead to 14.

    It’s 51-35 at the moment.

  15. djrebel Says:

C-Reb, it’s pretty ugly in person too. The gym isn’t overly intimidating, but it got away from the Rebels with their inabiity to guard on the perimter.

  16. djrebel Says:

Gators have chilled from the line a little bit. Still getting good looks.

  17. djrebel Says:

    HALFTIME: 53-39.

Honestly not a bad margin considering where this thing was headed. Florida began to miss some 3s, some of which were contested.

The margin might have been closer had Ole Miss not turned it over on three straight possessions in the final 2 minutes.

  18. djrebel Says:

    Halftime numbers:

Gators shooting 8-for-15 from 3-point range, Rebels 3-for-7.

Ole Miss has outrebounded Florida 19-12.

Huertas is 1-for-5 from the floor, 1-for-3 from 3.

Graham leads Ole Miss with 8 points, 3-for-5 from the floor.

Huertas and Terrico White each have seven points.

Ole Miss has played eight players, and starting point guard Will Bogan has three fouls.

Florida has three players with 8 points and is led by Calathes, who has 10 points, seven assists and two steals.

  19. ripleyreb Says:

    David needs to get hot11

  20. JB Says:

I think Ole Miss is doing very good against this talented Gator Team. Those 3- pointers that the gators are making does take a little sting out of the Rebs. Ole Miss gota make those free throws and stop making turn-over. Hope to see the game tighten up in the second half.

  21. djrebel Says:

T White at point to start the second half.

  22. djrebel Says:

Time out OM 16:29. Gators up 59-43. Rebels had a few stops to open the second half and had chances to cut the deficit below 10, but Huertas missed two 3-point looks, one rimming in and out.

Gators scored on a flash through the lane and a good pass to Tyus, then followed that up with a steal by Calathes and a pass to Shipman for the quick hoop, the eighth assist of the game for Calathes.

  23. djrebel Says:

Rebels have cut the margin to 10 after some nice defensive play. Gators have just one field goal in their last six possessions.

    11:48 left, and it’s 59-49.

  24. djrebel Says:

Rebels have outscored Gators 14-8 since 3:16 mark of the first half.

  25. djrebel Says:

Rebels really rebounding, even on offensive end. Huertas knocks down a 3, Holloway with a put-back and it’s a 64-58 game with 7:59 left. Gators call time out.

  26. djrebel Says:

Calathes with a 3 and a turnover on the in-bounds pass by T White. It’s 67-58, Gators with possession. Time out at 7:26.

  27. djrebel Says:

Time out 3:42. Gators up 72-66. Rebels limiting Gators to one shot, and sometimes they’re hitting it. Florida’s getting some nice inside-out play, but Ole Miss looks more into it defensive than in the first half. Rebels have slowed down the Gators’ transition game which was also a problem in the first half.

This is the closest the Rebels have been since it was 17-13 with 14:28 left in the first half.

  28. djrebel Says:

Gators 76-68 with time out at 1:15 left. Rebels were down six with the ball at 1:53 after a missed free throw but threw the ball away. Gators gota pair of free throws from Hodge on the possession.

  29. JB Says:

Ole Miss did very good tonight against this gator team. I am proud of you Rebels. Great game. GO REBELS. Now on the the Miss State and Arky game.

    Safe trip home PA.

  30. ripleyreb Says:

Good second half for the Rebs. Final 78-68 Gators.

  31. ColoradoReb Says:

    Good second half…

  32. L2 Says:

Incredible effort in 2nd half with all this team has been through already. Would have been easy to mail it in. Reflection of AK & staff not letting them! Not big on moral victories at all – but a team that has been hit as hard as this one – I’ll take this one!

  33. m4rebs Says:

I recorded the game on the DVR in HD, and man, those are some bright Oranges on the floor at the O’Connell Dome and some dang orange kicks Calethis was wearing. HD on FSN South was pretty nice looking. Too bad we didn’t play better…..

  34. m4rebs Says:

Our zone defense sux, period. I said it last year, and I’ll say it again, if you can’t match up with man in this league, you WILL NOT win. I’m not saying you have to play man ever trip, but it helps when you got a bunch of guys stroking it from behind the arc.

  35. djrebel Says:

Ripley Reb, thanks for the final.
