HOOPS: Gainesville thoughts

Good morning/afternoon. I’ve been sleeping off the effects of a crazy travel schedule.

We got back to the hotel about half past midnight and got up at 4:30 to get to the airport by 5:30 for the early flight out. The logical question is why not take a later flight out, but the options weren’t good.

Anyway, I thought the Rebels showed some fight in their 78-68 loss at Florida yesterday.

Offense is going to be a struggle for this team all year. If they can defend and rebound the way they did for the latter two-thirds of the Florida game I think they’ll be competitive.

The Rebels were already needing a third scorer to step up even when Chris Warren was healthy. Last night they got 16 from David Huertas on an off night, and freshman Murphy Holloway I think has shown — certainly he showed last night — that he can get you double-figure points and solid rebounding numbers. He had 11 points and seven rebounds last night.

What they got against the Gators that they had not been getting was 14 points from Zach Graham. He was 6-for-9 from the floor and also had five rebounds and three assists. Solid numbers. He’s shown flashes of that kind of productivity before, but he has to become more consistent with it for the Rebels to be competitive.

Last night was Graham’s sort of game, a tempo that allowed him to penetrate, and when he got into the lane he finished most of the time. He likes to launch 3-pointers too but did not attempt one last night.

Freshman point guard Will Bogan had a workmanlike performance with no assists but only two turnovers in 29 minutes. He had eight points and was 2-for-3 from 3-point range but will only shoot when wide open.

Freshman Terrico White played a lot of point too, actually started the game there. He had seven points, none in the second half, one assist and eight turnovers in 27 minutes.

As is often the case when someone has eight turnovers, several of them were charged to White but were the result of a teammate not holding onto a catchable pass.

Anyway, the Rebels showed some fight on the road, which is a good start for a team with a lot of issues right now.

PA, I thought Bogan should have played more. More so, I thought his teamates should have tried to get the ball to him in his comfort zone outside. I thought the first half Huertas thought he had something to prove and kinda hogged the ball. This would have been fine had he been hitting. You can’t miss free throws and win a game in the SEC. Hope you guys have a good week.

Colorado, I agree that teammates need to help Bogan find his spot, because he’s a good shooter when he gets there.

I didn’t think Huertas was necessarily hogging the ball. I think he believes, with good reason, that he is the most dependable scoring option right now. Holloway and Terrico White are scoring off hustle plays.

Graham did a good job of creating yesterday, and he may be the key to where this team goes from here.

PA, nice coverage on the game over the weekend. Was wondering if you’ve been hearing much about Auburn contacting Rocker throughout teh weekend?
