FOOTBALL: Recruiting momentum

That’s what Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt believes he established with six straight wins and a Cotton Bowl victory to close the 2008 season. He hopes it’s about to pay off.

In your article, PA, I think you referred to Melvin Harris (RS Freshman WR) as Melvin ‘Smith’.

  2. djrebel Says:

Dang. Thanks for catching. Where were you yesterday when I was writing it? (Ha.) Melvin Harris is a little taller than Melvin Smith.

  3. ColoradoReb Says:

I heard Reuben Randle had calle Nutt wanting to talk a bit. I hope we get two big time recievers. I think it would put us over the top. It worries me that O is after the Brown kid, he is one heck of a recruiter. He’s just not head coaching material.

  4. L2 Says:

P.A. if that is the only mistake you make – you are going to be just fine 🙂

Agree on Brown – O knows how to seal the deal with some of these guys. It seems like we have been so close over the years to grabbing a couple of game changers together….To really seal this momentum we MUST grab a couple of these big play guys!

  5. djrebel Says:

From what I’m told there Ed is involved in the Brown recruiting but that as much or more of that work is being done by Kiffen, because Brown is an offensive player. It won’t be the last time that Ed and Ole Miss knock heads, I’m sure.

  6. ColoradoReb Says:

Thats true PA, I guess I can’t get out of my head O was a head coach and is now only a defensive guy.

  7. ColoradoReb Says:

I think that helps Nutt a little at least. Of course, Kiff isn’t gonna be bad at recruiting either, in my op.

  8. ColoradoReb Says:

The more I look at this class the more I like it. I’m with PA, if we get a couple of big time play makers at reciever, I think we compete with any body. Although, the Alabamas, Floridas, and LSwho’s look impressive as well. I don’t think LSwho is doing as well as they would like though. Oh and don’t forget UT, they are going to be tough as well. It amazes me at how fast some of these schools can get back in it. It seems like it always takes us 5 to 7 years. State has some good recruits but from what I can see a lot of them may not make the grade and we still don’t know if McMullenburger can coach.

  9. Charles Says:

ColorodoReb, did you hear about the Nutt/Randle convo from a pretty legit source? That would be great news!

  10. ColoradoReb Says:

I did, but if your wrong or things change on here you get jumped on pretty quickly, so I have to be careful.

  11. ColoradoReb Says:

Nutts telling the truth about getting a lot of calls from recruits because my source on phone calls is absolute.

  12. ColoradoReb Says:

I got the State coach thing wrong because Byrne was flying all over the begging anyone to come to Moo U.

  13. Matthew Says:

Colorado I’m worried about the lack of LB help. I know we have Trahan but we lose a lot, w/ Palmer & Fein. I’m sure some of these Athletes/RB’s may be converted but I like money in the bank and a JUCO LB I think should have been signed.

  14. Charles Says:

I think we’ll end up signing one more, if not two LB’s. Hopefully either Willie Ferrell/Joel Kight/D.T. Shackleford. Kight did decide to take a trip to Auburn, which scares me, because that is closer to home for him that Oxford. Tim Simon will probably be a LB if he comes to Ole Miss and doesn’t bail on us for Clemson.

It’s a shame that we lost a stud Mississippi LB recruit in Marlon Walls to UT.

  15. david Says:

I’ll be honest if Drummond likes it this weekend we will see that sunday becuase he graduated already and has to enroll by Jan 31 to be enrolled somewhere or he has to wait till May.

As for brown, its down to UT and OM, I think he will get feed a lot of garbage at UT, I think distance plays a part and I am willing to bet coach nutt holds off on his in home until feb 2. I think brown’s grandmother knows the real Coach O, thats why Brown didnt want to go to OLe Miss in the first place.

As UT goes, I hope they flat on their faces. The money they are spending makes them look like the damn Yankees, dont the know you can pay someone to go get players but that doesnt mean they can coach. Look at the track record of their coaches…I am willing to bet they have more combined loses than any other staff in the sec

  16. colreb420 Says:

dont look for randle to be in the mix come signing day

  17. david Says:

Man Pa i wrote a lot, after teaching 2nd graders all day…I am surprized I am able to write or think clearly…

  18. m4rebs Says:

We have more LB’s than you think. Brumfield is a stud, but doesn’t get the hype like Palmer and Fein did. Temple can play too. We lost 2 but we still have some solid returners, and they played ALOT this past year.

  19. Charles Says:

Colreb420, I hope nobody realistically expects us to get him, because the odds are very much against us, and they will be setting themselves up for a letdown. Is there something you know or have heard him say specifically that makes you say he won’t be in the mix, or are you just basing this on him being a long shot?

The way I see it, I’m not getting my hopes up for him at all, but he would fit in our system well. He was QB this past year. Could you imagine him and Raymond Cotton running the Wild Rebel together! Wow!. The odds of him coming to Ole Miss are very slim, but he would be a good fit. He’d be a huge receiving target for Snead next year.

At LSU he would have true sophomore dual threat qb who isn’t the purest passer next year. At BAMA, he would have an unproven qb, who is probably good, but still unproven.

  20. m4rebs Says:

    And Cornell….we have experienced LB’s.

  21. ColoradoReb Says:

I’m not too worried about LB. I think Nutt really knows how to place players where they fit best. We all need to realize HS is a lot different than college. Most HS coaches a) don’t have the wisdom of someone like coach Nutt, b) have to use the players that are in their system so a lot of times I think kids end up playing in positions that are not a perfect fit for them, and c) I had some doubts at the beginning of Nutts hire about his coaching and recruiting abilities but that has faded and I truly believe for the second time in my life OM can be a team that competes for a national championship. I thought it when Eli came but the best I got was a Cotton Bowl. I just OM fans to stop trying to be so up tight and raise hell in the stands so that we are the loudest and toughest place for teams to come into. My dad played at OM and it was a different time and place than now, but he has always said OM fans didn’t take advantage of the home field. My pastor growing up always said church wasn’t the place to get wild and crazy, but I think a football game is the right place to cut up and get it out of your system.

  22. farley662 Says:

You got the State thing wrong because you are full of it. You also guaranteed that Gil was in at Auburn. Go ahead and play the big fish over here CReb. I can’t believe any of y’all actually buy the crap this guy sells. All of his “inside information” can be found on Rivals, Scout, or NAFOOM.

  23. ColoradoReb Says:

Farley, its been proven that Gil was in at Auburn until the good ole boys and Pat said no black coach. Everyone knows State begged everybody that would listen to come there especially after Byrne wrote checks the school couldn’t cash. I don’t think Nutt getting a call from Reuben is on any website and I’ve been right much more than I’ve been wrong. Why does it bother you so much? Because State is so boring you are not entertained or you are jealous. I’ve never made one post on States blog, ever. I got 2 things wrong out of 100, I think that would pass in anybody’s classroom. Go back over there with the landscapers and stay off our blog.

  24. farley662 Says:

I’ve been on this blog longer than you skippy. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest. You make grand statements that can be found on any site. The only OM person I know that has less credibility than you is Yancy. You both make factual statements that omit facts. I live in Oxford and there is absolutely nothing for anyone to be jealous of concerning OM. Nothing. Well, unless you count race relations which are about 20 years behind the rest of the country. Sure do love those Confederate flags. Your only defense seems to be calling State Moo U and calling me white trash, a neck, or uneducated. The fact that anyone would believe that you are anything but a blowhard speaks volumes to their intelligence. Most people on here, including fellow OM fans, think you are a moron.

  25. ColoradoReb Says:

And none of these OM guys on here buy into anything I say. They are pretty well in the know themselves. If they do buy into it, its because they have heard a little something themselves usually. One thing is for certain you have never done anything but call people names and cry about your crappie hounds. Grow up and get a life.

  26. farley662 Says:

Wouldn’t expect anything else from you Yancy.

  27. ColoradoReb Says:

Finally, what a great story to say that Wilson leaving State has help recruiting. When he was hired all we heard was Wilson was the big dawg recruiter for O and how it was really gonna hurt OM. What a joke, we all know O was a heck of a recruiter and the true big dawg, he just couldn’t coach em’ when he got them. Can I get an amen?

  28. farley662 Says:

Got your press conference about moving from yesterday in the Van Yancy. Even had someone take a picture for me. And amen and stuff.

  29. J. Moore Says:

I too live in Oxford and know you are dead wrong. Why all the anger.

  30. farley662 Says:

No anger J. I’ve seen how my biracial niece gets treated by everyone. And the fact that the Grove is about 97% white on gameday would beg to differ. I know black people live here, you just only see them at Walmart for some reason. The fact they don’t feel welcome by most people on the Square, in the Grove or at games has nothing to do with it though right?

  31. farley662 Says:

In all seriousness, I actually like living here. Most people are the salt of the Earth. Until football season rolls around and the same people I work and go to church with lose their minds. And I mostly like annoying Creb. Gives e something to do when work is slow.

  32. J. Moore Says:

I am sorry people treat your niece poorly. I certainly would not. You need to get out more, there are some great people in Oxford, nothing like the ones you describe. I know who you are talking about though, and you can find them in every town in the south, and most of the country for that matter. Try not to paint with such a broad brush…you will feel better.

  33. JB Says:

“The Rebels’ strong finish to the regular season, subsequent Cotton Bowl victory and No. 14 final ranking has created more than just a little good will on the recruiting trail”.

    Thats a big Amen, PA

The Rebels got over first of season jitters and after that it was smooth sailing for them. I think this strong finish to be a good recruiting credentials.

  34. doubletripper Says:

farley i have a hard time believing your niece is treated any better in starkpatch than in oxford. also when someone doesn’t have anything good he can say about his team i guess it is just natural for him to try and tear down the team he considers his team’s biggest rival. mooU has just assumed their rightful place in the SEC. learn to live with it and you will be much happier.

  35. farley662 Says:

Another MooU reference. Good one Paul.

  36. farley662 Says:

And she actually does get treated worse here. Not that you would believe me. Your sources probably told you the opposite. I don’t consider OM my biggest rival. I grew up in Columbus with a ton of Bama fans. If I was just trying to tear down someone it would be the Bammers.

I have a ton good to say about State. Have a great recruiting class, a bright, motivated head coach, and maroon helmets again. Then there is the baseball team with Coach Cohen. One of the best coaches in the country. He won’t Bianco it up. We could talk about basketball, but I’m sure you’d probably have your wife sue me since you can’t get it up either. I here it’s a common thing with OM people.

  37. ColoradoReb Says:

Considering I have been like a father to a mixed child that I coached in baseball since he was little, i resent your remarks. I judge people by the content of their charecter and not the color of their skin. I know racism exists but it exist from blacks and whites and the red man too. Most of the old guard at OM was actually for getting rid of Col. Reb., who by the way didn’t represent racism. I haven’t seen a Conf. battle flag in a long time except at the Cotton Bowl. Then I noticed it was a local Texas fan that hates TT and was just attending to support anyone other than TT. Most of the folks I know in Oxford go out of their way to be nice to people of color. Most of the blacks automatically think whites hate them so they don’t give em’ a chance to prove differently. State farmers still use black people as slaves in the Starkville area. You’re way off base on this one as you are most of the time.

  38. bigdraws Says:

“State farmers still use black people as slaves in the Starkville area.”

I hate to butt in here, but….What???

  39. ColoradoReb Says:

Try stating some facts instead of name calling. It makes you look ignorant farley. Even ole JB would probably agree with me on that. I guess you’ll call him a racist cause he didn’t vote for Obama. I did vote for Obama and I take care of a mixed child thats not even mine. You don’t have anything legit to say so you pull the race card. Furthermore, Yancey is a good guy and he tries to stay up on things as PA does. You on the other hand have nothing, nothing at all. I bet your wife talks onthe phone a lot because you can’t carry on an adult conversation.

  40. bigdraws Says:

    (pissing contest)

  41. ColoradoReb Says:

Farley is on here saying everyone in Oxford is a racist Bigdraws.

  42. ColoradoReb Says:

making those statements won’t keep moo u from sucking any less.

  43. bigdraws Says:

He lives in Oxford don’t he? I heard him one day talking bad about my dog. Says you can blame everything on Boxers. Barkingdraws still hasn’t recovered from that.

  44. ColoradoReb Says:

I think racism mostly exists in the churches around the south. For some reason we had a black lady that came to our church in Ms once and a deacon escorted her out. Too bad he is a die hard state fan and all of his adult children attended state. I don’t know why people don’t worship together but my daddy always said it wasn’t because there are two heavens.

  45. bigdraws Says:

I’ve got two rebel flags. One on my cooler and one in my shed. And my wife played college basketball. Which in some circles makes her automaticly black.

  46. farley662 Says:

Our church is integrated here. We also do several things with one of the MB Churches here. The pulpit swap is always a highlight.

  47. farley662 Says:

Draws, you are a racist and your dog drinks outta the toilet.

  48. bigdraws Says:

I go to church in the south too. Can’t understand why I married a “black” lady.

  49. bigdraws Says:

The only toilet my dog drinks out of is the mudhole in the backyard which is popular with my beer drinking buddies.

  50. ColoradoReb Says:

I hate that about your family if its true but I’d find it hard to believe. Maybe you are just using that as an excuse because she wasn’t following the rules. Its easy to pull the race card when you get caught cheating.

  51. ColoradoReb Says:

Having a confederate flag doesn’t make you a racist either. Just to educate you a little on that.

  52. farley662 Says:

Dude, you are an idiot. Leave it to you to just ignore the facts. Have a great night and try not to let facts get in the way of your ego.

  53. ColoradoReb Says:

I’ve seen a heritage not hate sticker on a black mans car before too. The civil war had black troops fighting for the south as well as whites. Some black folks were treated well.

  54. bigdraws Says:

I wasn’t lying about the flags. And I’m very proud of them. My ancestors are traced back to the war. Big history buff too.

  55. ColoradoReb Says:

Good to know I’m at least speaking facts. Hope you get your GED soon and grow up to be a productive member of society.

  56. JB Says:

Sound like a love affair going on here tonight.

  57. ColoradoReb Says:

One of my best friends in Jackson Big draws is a die hard State fan that s a member of Sons of Confederate Vets org. He collects the flags. That doesn’t make him a racist does it? Considering he is really married to black woman. Thanks for keeping it real Bigdraws. At least you do have some knowledge about the subject which is more than I can say for farley. And I though all dogs drink out of the toilet?

  58. ColoradoReb Says:

Hey JB, glad your here. farley says you are a racist. What do you think?

  59. bigdraws Says:

If my dog was allowed in the house there ain’t no doubt he’d drink out of the toilet. His job is to live in the backyard and give pedestrians hell. I like to call him “Dawg on Duty”.

  60. farley662 Says:

Farley said JB was a bitter old bastard. Once again you cock up the facts.

  61. JB Says:

    Nah, not me!! Love everybody.

  62. JB Says:

Farley didn’t mean that, he just running on.

  63. JB Says:

But Sgt Maj, dog, and cat will agree with him.

  64. ColoradoReb Says:

“Well, unless you count race relations which are about 20 years behind the rest of the country. Sure do love those Confederate flags.”
Sounds to me like you are calling all OM fans racists.

  65. ColoradoReb Says:

Big draws farley gonna say your not a dog lover cause you don’t let him in the house.

  66. bigdraws Says:

Two kids 3 and under + Big ass dog weighing in at 100lbs = bad idea

  67. ColoradoReb Says:

Name calling thats all you got. Youve stuck your foot in your mouth once again. The only fact I’ve heard is that dogs drink out of the toilet, which is true, mine do. Come on with something legit. Call your wife or the short bus driver maybe they can help you out.

  68. farley662 Says:

  69. ColoradoReb Says:

farleys gonna say you hate fat dogs now.

  70. farley662 Says:

What facts have you stated? I gave you an account of why I felt that way. But, I made it up. Of course I did. Then you win. You’re dumber than Jerrell Powe!

  71. farley662 Says:

Anti-fatkaninite! That’s two your sources got right. Can ya guess what I’m about to call you on my blog?

  72. bigdraws Says:

Make no mistake. My dog ain’t fat. He’s a muscle-bound goofy galute. But he ain’t fat.

  73. ColoradoReb Says:

Coming from someone that has a special needs child I wouldn’t think you would be on here calling people names. I don’t understand your logic. Do you even know the definition of a moron? quick don’t look it up

  74. ColoradoReb Says:

LOL big draws. I guess you’d say he’s big boned.

  75. farley662 Says:

Honestly, the situation at the park did happen. Exactly like that, but I’ve never had any other instance here. I met my wife here and have enjoyed living here for 3 years. Sometimes I just get a kick outta riling people up. Ask JB. We have done it several times. The people of Oxford and OM helped out so much when Aedan had his two heart surgeries. I love the people here. It’s the people who don’t live here and only come in for games that give the wrong idea to other teams fans. You learn when to and when not to venture out on the Square and to restaurants.

  76. ColoradoReb Says:

My state buddy down in Jackson has a english bulldog and I call him a sloberknocker.

  77. ColoradoReb Says:

Racism is pretty much everywhere but I don’t think there are any more white racist than black ones these days.

  78. farley662 Says:

I agree 100% with that one.

  79. ColoradoReb Says:

And they are at state and southern and alabama and lsu……….

  80. farley662 Says:

    More at Bama though…………..

  81. ColoradoReb Says:

Personally, there are certain crowds of white folks I don’t even like to be around. If someone thinks they are better than someone else makes us all feel like we’re a black person at a klan gathering.

  82. farley662 Says:

Does that mean you don’tound yourself like being around yourself when State people are around??????????????????? J/K

  83. ColoradoReb Says:

And the one time I drove through what they call three corners here in Denver and the time in La that I got robbed, I felt a little reverse racism. Just cause your niece had a bad experience with one a-hole in Oxford doesn’t make us all hate blacks.

  84. farley662 Says:

What happened there? Guess I do need to finally take that GED!

  85. farley662 Says:

Don’t you think I know that? I was just pushing your buttons. JB and m4 are immune to it. In time, you will be too.

  86. ColoradoReb Says:

Now, just a few more questions farley, is your sister married to a black man?

  87. farley662 Says:

My brother married a woman who had a biracial daughter. When she was two. She’s 12 now.

  88. bigdraws Says:

You’re brother married a two year old? Now I think we have bigger problems.

  89. farley662 Says:

Go to bed already draws! You been saying you were tired for two hours!

  90. ColoradoReb Says:

Its good that he was able to look past all that and love them both for who they are.

  91. farley662 Says:

Yup. Took several years for most of my family to accept them. I had to have a knock down drag out with several members of my family about it. But, most of them were Bama fans. That is no lie.

  92. farley662 Says:

Alright CReb, it’s actually been entertaining. Have a great night and I look forward to annoying you again in the near future. And in the words of

  93. farley662 Says:

“Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around when yellow will be mellow when the red man can get ahead, man and when white
    will embrace what is right.

Let all those who do justice and love mercy say amen.”

  94. farley662 Says:

Rev. Lowery. Those are his words.

  95. ColoradoReb Says:

I thought his prayer was little racist too. “when white will embrace whats right”

  96. ColoradoReb Says:

    sounded like jeramiah

  97. flareb Says:

This blog has gone the way of this country…………right in the crapper!!!!…….Draws, glad to see your still on the Lite…LOL on the marriage analysis a couple of paragraphs ago.

  98. flareb Says:

And……….let me be clear, no racial overtones in previous post…….Recruiting info please.
I will confer with PA tomorrow and let ya’ll know by way of “major announcement” if there will be anyone headed to the penalty box.
