FYI: Random Thoughts

I was at the coliseum for interviews with the women’s team yesterday.

The ladies are 4-5 in the league but believe the schedule sets up so that they have a shot to make a run at the NCAA tournament. They’ve been struggling with the press, and Ladner ran them through an extra 45 minutes of practice yesterday. Much of the workout was dedicated to handling pressure.

Seems the press trouble has been mostly late in games when the team has had a habit of giving up leads.

Ole Miss lost an 18-point lead midway through the second half at Mississippi State. The Lady Bulldogs are in Oxford tomorrow night for an 8 p.m. televised start. …

Former Ole Miss coach Carol Ross, who led the Lady Rebels to the Elite Eight then handed the reigns to Ladner two years ago, will handle color commentary for the FSN broadcast vs. MSU. …

On the men’s side, I think Andy Kennedy was surprised to see me down below at Tad Smith. He walked over and asked, “Do you need me for anything?” Actually, no. Men’s interviews are today or tomorrow. …

Former Ole Miss players Jason Flanigan and Jason Harrison visited with members of the staff before practice. …

If the Rebs pull this one off it would be tremendous. LSU plays State tonight at the Hump and LSU feels slighted because they are not ranked. I think State will be ready but both are catching LSU at the wrong time. Go Rebels.

PA, what were the Jasons up to on campus? And can you give an update on what they are doing these days? I remember them both very fondly for the effort they gave when they played.

jh, the two Jasons are coaching together. I’m not sure, but it seems they are at the JC at/near Morehead. Is that MS Delta JC? Both those guys had the confidence a point guard needs to be successful. I recall watching Harrison vs Mateen Cleaves in the NCAA Tourney. Jason hit a long three to go ahead (I think) and did a little “trash talk” to Cleaves, who then took over and eliminated the Rebels. Michigan State went on to take the prize that year, as I recall.

JH, I don’t know much about the Jasons except that they are coaching together at Holmes CC. I was covering State when they were playing at Ole Miss, so I don’t know them personally. I asked Flanigan if he was going to deliver a motivational talk. He laughed, and said, “Hmph … We can’t get our own kids motivated.”
