FOOTBALL: Schedule notes

Spoke to Pete Boone a few minutes ago. Still seeking a 12th football game, but that search will shift gears now that the ESPN Thursday with South Carolina has been finalized.

Pete mentioned TCU, Virginia and Indiana as possibilities. The most emphasis was on TCU, however. In fact, he said that if a deal could not be struck by Friday he would move forward with seeking out a Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) buyout game.

A deal has been signed with Tulane for four games beginning in New Orleans in 2010.

What if we filled our last game with USM? I’m sure they would drop one of there other games like Alcorn St. if we came calling. I’m tired of people saying we are too scared to play them. I know they don’t travel well and we won’t make as much playing them as maybe a TCU; but it goota be better than playing a D1AA. Just a though I had…

  2. Charles Says:

I think I heard that UVA and Indiana scheduled a game together today. I may be wrong, but if so, that would really narrow our choices.

  3. rebel steve Says:

I AGREE WITH TYLER WE NEED TO PLAY USM

  4. rebel2011 Says:

if we played tcu then that would be an extremely tough game for the second game. i would rather see us play one of the bcs teams you mentioned

  5. Charles Says:

Not going to be UVA or Indiana….

Come on Pete, get it together…

  7. cr Says:

Regarding USM: just say no. I think Ole Miss fans enjoy a trip to New Orleans.

  8. rebel2011 Says:

according to the link by charles, it will not be tcu either because they are playing virginia the second week, which is when we have our open week

Need to pick up a Sun Belt school. Swap a 2 for 1 w/ Middle TN. state is playing there this fall, and we could get them to come here this fall and next then go to the Boro the 3rd year or buy the 3rd year out if necessary.

  10. colreb420 Says:

it is going to be a ncaa 1 aa team

  11. cr Says:

Playing 2 1AA teams in one year is not good – especially back to back. So much for the goodwill built with the national media. Come on Pete step up and get us a real game.

  12. Charles Says:

I’m going to be really dissapointed if we play 2 1AA teams. A UVA or Indiana game would have been about perfect for us. It wouldn’t have been too hard, but it also wouldn’t have been a push over.

I looked at U of South Florida’s schedule who I had seen mentioned as another potential opponent, but they already play U of Miami and FSU out of conference. Doubt they’ll want another hard game.

Ok State has an open date on 10/03/09. Is that the same weekend we are trying to get a game? I think it is the wknd of 10/03 or 09/12 now that the Vandy game was moved. That would be a tough game for the week before we play BAMA though. I don’t know if I want someone that tough at that point in our schedule. If we do play them, it would have to be the second game of the year. That game could sell a ton of tix if we did it in Dallas. Both teams could be top 10 going into the season. It would make our overall schedule brutal though.

  13. colreb420 Says:

Thanks pete once again you have dropped the ball. i know nutt doesnt want to play too tough of an opp before we go to usc.

  14. Jeff Jolly Says:

I can’t believe it is February 13th, 2009 and the 2009 football schedule is not complete.

  15. Jeff Jolly Says:

South Alabama Jaguars may be looking for a home game in Ladd Stadium….Pete…call Joey Jones or Joe Gottfried in Mobile.

  16. farley662 Says:

Who are the out of conference games so far? UAB, Memphis, and Louisiana Lafayette?

  17. Jeff Jolly Says:

    I think so Farley.

Personally….I’d rather play tougher teams. To be the best….you have to beat the best.

  18. farley662 Says:

I was thinking that. At least 1 good out of conference opponent. Being a team from MS you already have the cards stacked against you. When UAB is the powerhouse on out of conference schedule, your BCS total at the end of the year is going to take a hit. Everyone plays a good team out of conference now. You know when Bama starts playing good teams you have to.

  19. cr Says:

Perhaps ESPN is scheduling the last game on our schedule as well.

  20. SSA Says:

TCU should finish out our schedule, they have only announced dates for three of their games and they still need to pick up a non-conference game. ESPN is already pushing them as the BCS buster for next year.

  21. nwrman Says:

I think a home & home with USM would be great!

  22. cr Says:

If you think a home and home series with USM would be great then you probably think USM is great or at least Ole Miss should help them get there. I cannot think of any good reason for Ole Miss to play USM – anywhere, anytime – at least not from an Ole Miss perspective.

  23. doubletripper Says:

i agree cr. let’s not lend usm any kind of legitimate standing. i would lots rather see us play a good non conference game than them. playing weak sisters at home any time, is not going to fill up the vaught. i know you don’t want to play a power house every time out, but you don’t get better by playing patsies either.
