HOOPS: LSU game thread

Hello folks. I’m back at the wheel. Spent yesterday chainsawing and hauling a tree out of the backyard, a casualty from the strong winds last Wednesday.

Actually the winds weren’t that strong, but the tree was dead and was on my to-do list for the spring.

I left Tupelo this morning about 6 and visted a few folks along the way.

It’s about an hour and 15 minutes to tip here at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Brad Henderson, a former Tupelo High baseball standout and the career hits leader at Ole Miss, is down from Jonesboro for this game.

LSU will be without sophomore guard Bo Spencer, an 11.6 points a game scorer, because of injury. That’s not like being without Marcus Thornton or Tasmin Mitchell, who are both healthy.

  1. JB Says:

I definitely think that the Rebs should eat more grits. Then they could really put them LSU Tigger away to night and have them for breakfast in dthe morn. GO REBELS!!!!!

  2. djrebel Says:

JB, we’ll see in about 23 minutes what the Rebels have been eating. The P-MAC is getting crowded.

  3. djrebel Says:

LSU, like Ole Miss, is buidling a basketball practice facility. Looks like the Rebels are a little farther along, not much.

LSU’s building is adjacent to the arena and will actually be connected, allowing indoor traffic from one to the other.

Your Ole Miss lineup: Huertas, Terrico White, Malcolm White, DeAundre Cranston, Zach Graham

  4. djrebel Says:

An LSU team that was 20-4 would fill up this place in the 80s. Not so right now. Lots of vacant seats, particularly in the upper levels.

  5. farley662 Says:

Why can’t teams practice in the arena they play in?

  6. djrebel Says:

Need more than one floor Farley. That’s the stated policy. Of course, a new building is a recruiting benefit too, and the arms race is under way.

  7. JB Says:

Miss State just went down to Auburn. Auburn on a winning streak 3 in row. State starting to falter. Time for Ole Miss to start make a restart and get back in the SEC West..

  8. djrebel Says:

Tigers up 10-4 and a timeout at 15:58. Better start for Ole Miss than Jan. 17 but Rebels aren’t getting back in transition. Tigers have scored on the break twice, including just now with Collis Temple finishing and a foul on Malcolm White. Temple will be at the free throw line when play resumes.

  9. djrebel Says:

Brad Locke reports that MSU set an SEC record with 62 3-point attempts today in loss at Auburn.

  10. djrebel Says:

No heckling of Kennedy here. That really hasn’t been an issue in most road venues.

  11. djrebel Says:

Huertas is playing well. Can’t get off a 3, 0-for-1 there. But he’s putting the ball on the floor and creating opportunities for Malcolm White.

  12. djrebel Says:

That being said, LSU leads 20-15.

  13. djrebel Says:

3 from the key by T White. His second 3, both from the key. Time out at 11:29. LSU leads 20-18.

  14. djrebel Says:

LSU 8-for-13 from the floor at this point, Ole Miss 7-for-13

  15. farley662 Says:

I guess that makes sense. As far as the heckling goes, it is probably a direct result of the SEC gestapo laying down the law.

  16. djrebel Says:

Terrico just picked up his second foul at the 9:37 mark. He’s going to the bench. Tigers up 25-18

  17. djrebel Says:

Time out LSU at 7:13. Will Bogan banks a 3, Graham hits one in a more pure fashion and Ole Miss leads 27-26. Rebels getting some good play from their zone defense right now while LSU has gone to its bench. TIgers first five back in the game when play resumes.

  18. djrebel Says:

Time out 6:07. It’s 29-29. Rebels getting good work on the offensive glass, probably six or seven rebounds and at least eight second-chance points.

  19. djrebel Says:

Rebels six offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points, the partial stat sheet says. Ole Miss has a 14-9 edge on the glass overall.

  20. djrebel Says:

Time at 3:49. Huertas can’t get good looks from 3 but is having success off the dribble. Just scored in the lane and drew a foul against Mitchell. Rebels lead 33-29 and Huertas is at the line when play resumes.

  21. djrebel Says:

Rebels went on a 17-3 run to lead 35-29 without Terrico

  22. djrebel Says:

Kennedy calls time at 48.9. Rebels up 35-32. Huertas has been key in this run, though he just missed a deep 3. Ole Miss is getting it into the lane, unlike last week at Vandy. Bogan has been OK in Terrico’s absence with a 3-pointer and no turnovers.

  23. djrebel Says:

Rebels 37-32 at the half. Malcolm White scores last FG of the half on a hook just outside the lane. White’s got 8 and 6 rebounds at the break.

  24. ripleyreb Says:

Good half, much different from the game in the Pad a few weeks ago. Rebounding is the difference in this game. Go Rebels.

  25. Brian Says:

Rebels looking good tonight. AK said he was going to work on the team’s issues with starting out slow in practice this week. I don’t know if it was some rest or LSU going 2OT on Wednesday or something else. The Rebs are playing hard and it is fun to watch. Keep it up and good luck in the 2nd half!

  26. JB Says:

Good to see you in there ripley, i am enjoying the game and believe you are. Hope for another strong for the Rebels in the second half. Great job PA that you are doing, keep up the good work.

  27. djrebel Says:

    At the Half:

Rebels have a 24-13 edge on the boards with 15 second-chance points to zero for LSU. 11 offensive boards for Ole Miss, 2 for LSU.

Malcolm White and Huertas have eight points to lead Ole Miss.

Tigers shooting 50 percent to Rebels 42.9.

Marcus Thornton leads LSU with 10 points.

  28. ripleyreb Says:

Thanks JB, love this game so far . Hope everything is going good down in the Sunshine State.

  29. djrebel Says:

Time out at 15:39. Rebels up 48-41. LSU’s Thornton was just fouled, continued on to the rim and fell down hard on his knee. He’s limping off the floor now. LSU ball when play resumes.

Graham is having a better game for Ole Miss than last week, because he’s able to get into the lane. Vandy did not allow that. Seven points, four rebounds so far for Graham.

  30. maxdawg Says:

Run them to death Ole Miss! At least someone is playing with some life tonight. That 2 OT really hurt us it looks like.

  31. djrebel Says:

Bogan just came in for Huertas and it looks like Kennedy is giving Huertas an ear full.

  32. djrebel Says:

Tigers make it 48-45 on a Mitchell jumper and Kennedy calls time at 14-21. Rebels looking a bit disoriented right now.

  33. djrebel Says:

Thornton back in the game for LSU. Rebels up 50-45 but Mitchell at the line for LSU.

  34. djrebel Says:

Rebels just commited sixth foul. LSU in the bonus. Rebels up by 6.

  35. djrebel Says:

Time at 11:40. Rebels up 55-49. Trent Johnson is arguing a call right now, saying his man Mitchell was fouled on a rebound under the Tigers basket.

Ole Miss has two, Graham and Cranston, with three fouls. Point guard Garrett Temple has three for LSU.

Tigers have 3 fouls to give.

  36. djrebel Says:

Time out LSU at 8:56. Rebels lead 62-53, Tigers with the ball when play resumes. Huertas just got an open look and hit his first 3 of the game. Athletic play by White for a pass to Henry for 2.

  37. djrebel Says:

Time out at 7:47. Ole Miss leads 62-54. Graham just committed his fourth foul, and LSU will be at the line when play resumes.

LSU’s Thornton is back in the game but has missed his last two 3s.

Tigers are really looking for Mitchell on the block on offense.

  38. djrebel Says:

In the blink of an eye its 62-59. Thornton hits his first 3 of the second half, then Garrett Temple steals it from Terrico and passes to Thornton for 2.

Time out at Ole Miss at 6:41. The gym is coming to life.

  39. djrebel Says:

Tigers lead 63-62. Rebels haven’t scored since 9:12. Terrico is forcing things.

  40. djrebel Says:

Time out at 3:57. Rebels are 0-of-4 on with two missed free throws and a foul on their last six trips. LSU just committed its sixth team foul, so Ole Miss is in the bonus.

  41. djrebel Says:

LSU’s lead is its first since 29-27 at 6:51 in the first.

  42. djrebel Says:

Time out Ole Miss at 2:11. Rebels have missed seven straight shots, not getting to the offensive glass either. LSU leads 67-62.

  43. djrebel Says:

Time out Ole Miss at 17.3. LSU leads 69-66 after a Holloway tip.

  44. djrebel Says:

Tigers have kept Ole Miss of the glass the last 10 minutes. Rebels went from 9:12 to 1:59 without points.

  45. djrebel Says:

73-66 LSU, final. Huertas helped off the floor faving his left shoulder with 7.4 seconds left. More on that later.

  46. JB Says:

Ole Miss played a great game, even the loss, i see it as a victory. This is one scrappy bunch of players. GO REBELS!! YOU ARE MY HERO’S.

  47. ripleyreb Says:

Tough loss, great effort by the Rebs. That 7 minute cold spell did us in. Bring on Tennessee.

  48. Jay Stokes Says:

cr, what’s up with your boy terrico turning the ball over so much and taking bad shots? does that mean he’s an expendable player now like you say warren and huertas are?

  49. JB Says:

There was a cold streak, but they did not quit or give up. They still carried the battle to LSU. Rate them above that “All-Century team”.
