BASEBALL: Open for business

It’s about 30 minutes to first pitch here. We’re checking out the new digs at renovated and expanded Swayze Field. It’s nice, as you might expect. There’s still working going on in some parts of the stadium, but it’s nearly complete.

Ole Miss v. Central Arkansas at 3 p.m.

I’ll have updates below.

Interesting early stat. Matt Smith hasn’t struck out in 14 at-bats. He’s hitting .286 with 2 RBIs. Smith led the SEC in strikeouts last year with 80.

  2. RoastBeef1 Says:

Wish I could be there but got class. Does it seem like a decent crowd up there so far pa?

  3. djrebel Says:

It’s really more people here than I would have thought. Lots of people out to see the stadium, I reckon. Plenty of good seats available for you after class, Beef.

On the field, Tim Ferguson is the first of the opening-weekend suspended players to see action. He’s starting at third base for Evan Button.

The unconfirmed word is that Button has a hamstring pull and could be on the shelf a little while.

Game is under way now with the leadoff batter.

  4. djrebel Says:

UCA gets a bloop double, a wild pitch from Nathan Baker and an infield hit to lead 1-0 after a half inning.

Rebels batting in the top of the second now.

  5. djrebel Says:

Rebels get the first two batters on with walks, then Smith fans (guess I jinxed him), and Power hits into a 4-6-3 DP.

    UCA 1, Ole Miss 0

  6. farley662 Says:

I have a stadium question for ya PA. If you walk up and buy a ticket, where are the seats located? Do you have to sit in the outfield or get a seat in the grandstand.

  7. bigdraws Says:

I assumed the chairbacks are sold out to season ticket holders. Prolly buy some off of a scalper though.

  8. farley662 Says:

I was looking at the seating chart and they have some they call grandstand. No donation required to buy them. Doesn’t really say on the website.

  9. djrebel Says:

Farley, I’m told they have about 1,000 seats, maybe a few more, that were not sold for season tickets. I figure those are as far away from the action as possible.

From my vantage point on the third base line, I’m wondering if some of those unsold seats might not be in the new upper level in short right field. Those really don’t look too bad.

    Every seat is a chairback.

  10. farley662 Says:

That’s what I was thinking. I called the ticket office and the little guy who answered the phone had no clue. Was rather rude about it too.

  11. djrebel Says:

Now Farley, was he really rude or are you just imagining that because you were calling Ole Miss?

  12. djrebel Says:

Rebels coming to bat in the bottom of the third, still trailing 1-0.

  13. farley662 Says:

No, really. OM baseball I support and have a great time. It’s the one sport I want to see OM do well in. I love baseball. This guy seemed genuinely upset I called and asked about the seats. Maybe he’s just having a bad day.

  14. bigdraws Says:

No Pa. He imagined that because he’s Farley.

  15. farley662 Says:

I’m already practicing that prayer for in the morning draws, keep on.

  16. djrebel Says:

Rebels are hitless so far against sophomore Reece Cross. He threw three innings in the Bears’ win here last year giving up 1 hit and no runs.

The Bears have three hits against Nathan Baker, but Baker has looked pretty good. One hit was a blooper, another an infield single.

  17. bigdraws Says:

Hey Pa. Wake Locke up and tell him State’s playing.

  18. JB Says:

PA: I believe you said that Tim Ferguson was at third today, is Kevin Mort back at SS?

  19. djrebel Says:

Rebels break up the no-hitter on a hard smash to third by Smith. Inning ends with two runners on base and UCA center fielder Tie Throneberry making a running over the shoulder catch at the wall.

The Rebels haven’t rocked Cross by any means, but they’ve hit balls harder than the Bears have hit against Baker to this point.

    Does this script sound familiar?

UCA 1, Ole Miss 0. Bears batting in the top of the fifth.

  20. djrebel Says:

More on Throneberry. Bears get an HBP to open the inning, and Throneberry follows with a gapper in left-center for an RBI double. UCA leads 2-0.

  21. djrebel Says:

Draws, don’t know what Brad’s got going on today. I’m here mainly for the opening of the stadium. We won’t be covering many non-conference games while basketball is still going on.

JB, Kevin Mort is back at short today.

  22. djrebel Says:

Bears have runners first and second, no outs. Action in the pen for Ole Miss. If UCA could get down a bunt this could get messy, but they’re struggling to do that right now.

  23. djrebel Says:

Baker gets a double-play ball and is lifted in favor of Jake Morgan, so Bianco goes from lefty to righty on the mound. Morgan starts with Geren, the 3-hole hitter, and a runner at third.

  24. djrebel Says:

Morgan strands the runners. UCA leads 2-0. Rebels coming to bat in the bottom of the fifth.

  25. Mooch Says:

Thanks for the updates, PA. Morgan get out of the inning unscathed?

  26. JB Says:

Thanks PA about Mort. I think it just a matter of time and the Rebels bats get to Cross and put some runs up. GO REBELS!!! Great job PA sending that game to us down here in Florida.

  27. djrebel Says:

Morgan hit the first guy he faced, but the second guy looked overmatched. Ole Miss isn’t looking overmatched against Cross but surely isn’t making him sweat.

  28. djrebel Says:

The Rebels have gotten Cross out of the game with a one-out walk by Mort and a ground-rule double by Basham that bounces over the fence in the corner in RF.

New pitcher for UCA is Dustin Ward, a righty. He starts with Jordan Henry and runners at second and third.

    Bears leading 2-0.

  29. djrebel Says:

Henry singles up the middle on a 1-0 pitch. Mort and Basham score. Game tied at 2.

  30. djrebel Says:

Ward’s a lefty. Sorry bout that.

  31. djrebel Says:

Power sends a 1-2 fastball up the middle to score Henry, and Smith, who had walked. Rebels lead 4-2 and the new Swayze Field gets its first hotty toddy cheers.

  32. djrebel Says:

Freshman Taylor Hashman has his first career home run, a 378 job over the wall in left-center. Rebels lead 5-2 in the top of the sixth.

  33. djrebel Says:

Pitching change for UCA. New guy is Jeremy Brewer, a righty. (He really is a righty.) He’ll start wtih Zach Miller at the plate, Jeremy Travis at first, no outs in the sixth, and the Rebels leading 5-2.

  34. djrebel Says:

Tim Ferguson may have put this one one auto pilot with a three-run double. A smash down the left field line scores Miller, Mort and Henry, and the Rebels lead 8-2. Still batting in the bottom of the sixth.

  35. djrebel Says:

UCA changing pitchers again. Rebels lead 9-2, still batting in the sixth.

  36. ripleyreb Says:

PA, enjoyed your chat with Coach Kennedy on the radio this afternoon, good job. Thanks for the live updates, not on network radio today.

  37. djrebel Says:

Been working on the print edition gamer. The Rebels have had no trouble since taking over in the middle innings. Ole Miss leads 10-2 and has plenty of reserves in the game going into the top of the ninth.

  38. djrebel Says:

Thanks Ripley, glad you could catch it on the radio. The signal starts getting fuzzy a little farther west. It’s pretty strong in southern Tennessee and northwest Alabama.

  39. JB Says:

Thanks PA for your coverage here today, I got to go now and itd look like the Rebels are on the way a 2-2 season send off. That new OU stadium looks great and accommodating for faithful Rebel fans. Probably for some room for freeloaders out there somewhere. Oxford a great city, just some don’t see it that way.

  41. Braves Dawg Says:

Did Oklahoma renovate their baseball stadium too? 🙄

  42. JakeFuryReb Says:

So, I left to go watch my lady play a basketball game earlier and the score was 2-0 UCA. It felt great to watch the news and see the Rebs beatdown of them 10-2.

  43. JB Says:

Don’t know about Oklahoma, but Ole Miss did.

“The exciting first pitch in the newly renovated Oxford-University Stadium is hours away, and the facility is set to be fully operational for the home opener. Tuesday’s game time is set for 3 p.m. against Central Arkansas.”
