HOOPS: Rebels on the road

Ole Miss is 1-6 on the SEC road as it plays at Arkansas tomorrow night, its final road game. Seven SEC teams have won at least twice on the road this season.

The research below comes from friend and former co-worker Gregg Ellis. Now the media relations basketball contact at Mississippi State, Gregg has compiled these numbers that include this season’s records and go back to the 1998-1999 season, Rick Stansbury’s first as MSU head coach.

This research says one of two things about Gregg: A. He isn’t afraid of work. B. His new job gives him lots of free time. I’ll just report and let you decide.

SEC Road Records
Since 1998-99
Team Record Pct.
Kentucky 52-35 .598
Florida 46-41 .529
Tennessee 39-48 .448

Alabama 23-64 .264
Auburn 23-64 .264

No doubt, the data is there to show we are pitiful on the road. My comment coming up doesn’t change that FACT, nor does it change the fact that our basketball program, even in our “best years” when we made it to the Sweet 16, our deepest run in the NCAA tournament, ever, is just NOT GOOD. Ok, for my comment…..
You only dig this deep for one of two reasons: 1) You feel pretty good about where “your” team will end up, or 2) You feel pretty good about your arch-rival being on the bottom of a list like this. Thank you Gregg, no doubt that money talks and your degree (and something else) walks.

    holy snikies

m4, I guess you are TRYING to be FUNNY, but Gregg stated that when he left the DJ, the MSU Media Relations job was what he went to college for.

DESPITE that, he was a much better beat writer than what we MSU fans are STUCK with now at the DJ.

  6. rebelgiant66 Says:

    well played, M4… well played.

  7. bigdraws Says:

Yeah, glad you didn’t over-react or anything, LOL!!

  8. djrebel Says:

Guys, anything Gregg does now he does with the intention/hope that his effort will benefit Mississippi State. That’s not hard to understand.

He forwarded this information to me as a courtesy. I don’t think it breaks news that surprises anybody, and he did not know it was going to become a blog post.

I posted it because I find it interesting information. Ole Miss isn’t that far behind South Carolina and Arkansas on this list.

Not Gregg’s fault Ole Miss sucks.

  10. JB Says:

A bunch of Staters over here today ganging up M4 and their own Blog BL. Shame on you!!!

  11. The Ole Outlaw Says:

“Ole Miss sucks”! ! This ole outlaw reb gota feel that they may suck in the minds of some, not me.They still have enought left in them to beat cowbelle state univ on 07 Mar 09 in that wounderful city of OXFORD.

If you guys ever need a good laugh, go to http://www.fmylife.com and read some of the stuff on it. Works everytime!

  13. m4rebs Says:

My point was only that he does not work for the UK, UF, UT, or even LSU. Therefore, his intent was to highlight a negative for the cross-state rival. I’m not saying he’s a jerk, or MSU sucks or anything like that. I simply stated my thoughts on his data point. I wasn’t attacking Gregg, PA, and I realize you were just passing on information to us, but as I said, the only reason you dig up this kind of stuff is for those 2 reasons. All the MSU folks can call me a wanker and whatever else, but you guys know it’s true. We need to get the Ole Miss football media relations folks to publicize the all-time SEC Football records, broken down by teams, against Division I-AA opponents. Have a nice night.

Rebs winning in Baseball 11-2 in the bottom of the 6th tonight against Arkansas State.

Don’t be an idiot……..It’s rather evident with your one syllable responses that Cowtown is your kind of place. Let me expand your vocabulary…..analyze and decipher. Look it up. M4 makes a valid point and if the shoe were on the other foot, you guys would be raising all kinds of hell. As an OM fan it bothers me to see that type of info but it’s there and AK will hopefully try to improve.
As for your “cheap shot” comments, I’ll ask that you probe the inner depths of your mind and once the “echo” has settled try to put together two or three sentences with meaning.

  16. BirdZ! Says:

Gregg Ellis made a valid point (a factual one at that), and m4 made his point (which is pure speculation).

Why would MSU fans be raising hell about facts? It’s worth noting that MSU has a coach with a long enough tenure so these stats actually mean something, rather than a 3 or 4 year window.

  17. m4rebs Says:

Birdz, what valid point did Gregg Ellis make, exactly?? That Mississippi State has the 5th best Road conference record since 1998? What does that prove about his institution?

  18. bigdraws Says:

The point is matt, that Om is struggling on the road except for at state. And I think outlaw, that most state folks would agree that msu is horrible this year. Personally if we’d have had the bb history that yall have had I couldn’t care less if someone posted a stat like that. It’s done on a regular basis against msu football. Get over it.

  19. djrebel Says:

Matt, I don’t know what point he was trying to make, and it may be that the research didn’t support his point as strongly as he would have liked. We really didn’t discuss it.

There is probably similar research going on in the Ole Miss office. Sometimes it appears in their notes, and sometimes I use it.

  20. BirdZ! Says:

you got it m4. MSU has the 5th best SEC road record during Stansbury’s tenure. Congrats on going “Oliver Stone-type conspiracy” with it, though.

  21. farley662 Says:

I know Gregg and asked him about it. He looked it up because he was curious how State fared in the league compared to other teams. It was after he did the research that he realized that OM was at the bottom of the barrel. And as far as his degree goes, you pretty much pegged the fact it’s a worthless piece of paper. He did graduate from Ole Miss by the way.

  22. imabulldog Says:

First of all Gregg didn’t post this here, PA did-and for whatever reason he did-it’s done.

There’s no reason to get your thongs in a wad, it’s just the facts.

OM went to a bowl game last yr, State didn’t-we sucked. That’s a fact, and one that can’t be ignored.

Only motive I question is that by ‘who’ posted it, NOT where it came from.

Sometimes your very ‘own’ like to stir things up, not us

  23. m4rebs Says:

What exactly are you trying to say with the ‘own’ comment, ima? Gregg is a turncoat………ya’ll chill out, I’m just kidding!!!! you know, sometimes it’s fun to just have a little bicker. We neither have anything to talk about with our basketball teams this year, us much less than ya’ll for sure. It’s just been too boring since signing day, no offense PA, you don’t make the news, you just report it, right? I know ya’ll think I was making a big deal about the whole record deal, but it really didn’t bother me or surprise me at all. The only thing I thought was strange was that Alabama was so much better than us on the road. All you ever hear around here is about how terrible Gottfreid’s teams are on the road.
