BASEBALL: Ole Miss-Bama Game 2

Wild finish last night in Game 1. It was a deadline pusher, and that’s never a good thing.

It’s not often you see two good pitchers blow up at the same time. Fortunately for Ole Miss, the Rebels had the last at-bat.

Alabama right fielder Kent Matthes has been on a tear, but he was hitless last night. He’ll be one to keep an eye on today.

The Tide got big production from the bottom of the order last night. Seven-hole hitter Jake Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and a home run; eight-hole hitter Vin DiFazio had a solo home run; and nine-hole hitter Alex Kubal, who was at .214 when the night began, was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, including a one-out hit off Bittle to start the rally in the ninth.

Thanks Matt for jumping in with the updates last night.

We’re about 30 minutes from the first pitch today, and the rain is coming.

Here are the lineups:

Alabama
LF Dugas
SS Rutledge
2B Wilson
RF Matthes
1B May
DH Odle (He was a pinch-hitter and walked in the eighth last night, then popped out against McKean to end the Tide ninth.)
3B Smith
C Trotter (Former Itawamba AHS and ICC standout, hitting .478 in 23 at-bats, his sixth start.)
CF Kubal

Ole Miss
CF Henry
2B Ferguson
LF Power
RF Travis
DH Henson (replaces Phillips)
1B Smith
3B Miller (replaces Button)
SS Mort
C Basham

In what looked like a repeat of last night, starter Phillip Irwin put himself in a hole by hitting two straight batters. Matthes followed with an RBI single, but Irwin regained his composure and fanned the five- and six-hole hitters to get out of the inning.

Rebels get off a couple of good swings against Morgan, but hit them right at people. Miller singles with two outs but is stranded on a ground ball to short by Mort.

    Bama 1-0

Irwin sets the top three down in order. Matthes will lead off the fourth. Miller made a nice play on a ground ball right down the third base foul line, long throw to first for the third out.

Irwin gives up a leadoff double to Smith, who is bunted to third. Kubol grounds out for the second out, and Irwin gets two strikes on Dugas, before Dugas bounces one between third and short with Miller playing close to the bag at third. Irwin gets Rutledge to end the inning, but Bama extends the lead.

A year ago Ole Miss was a team that could get a run back with a big swing. Doesn’t look like that this year. Not much power, and when all the bats aren’t clicking, as is the case against Morgan so far, every run is huge.

    Bama 2-0.

    — PA

  9. djrebel Says:

    Bott 5
Mort walks, the fourth by Morgan, Basham reaches on an E5, very hard-hit ball and bad hop. Henry singles home Mort (2-1).

Ferguson goes 2-2 in the count then singles up the middle to score Basham (2-2).

Power, empty in two previous RBI opportunities, hits a ground ball past the mound. It’s grabbed by the shortstop who forces Ferguson, but Power is safe at first. Henry scores for a 3-2 lead.

Finally, a long ball. Travis gets his fourth of the year. Good thing those fences were moved in three years ago or this one would have been foul.

Rebels get a walk, an error, three hits and five runs off Morgan, and that finishes him.

New Alabama pitcher is right-hander Nathan Kilcrease, 3.29 ERA in 13 2-3 innings.

    Still Bottom of 5
Kilcrease goes 0-2 to Henson, then Henson flies to left. 3 outs.

5 runs, 3 hits, 1 error, 1 BB, no LOB.

    Ole Miss 5-2

    — PA

  11. djrebel Says:

    Top 6
Wilson walks, Matthes singles as the first two batters reach. Then Irwin gets a chopper to third, nice play from Miller who steps on the bag, throws quickly to second for the double play, and Ferguson’s throw to first is almost in time for the triple.

Irwin fans the next batter, Odle.

    Ole Miss 5-2

    — PA

  12. djrebel Says:

    Bott 6
Kilcrease retires the Rebels on just four pitches. One is towering fly that Matthes leaps to catch above the wall in RF, robbing a home run. The fourth is a smash off the bat of Mort, a liner caught by second baseman Ross Wilson.

    Ole Miss 5-2

    — PA

  13. djrebel Says:

    Top 7
Irwin sets the bottom 3 down in order getting 9-hole hitter Kubal with a swinging strikeout.

McKean is in the bullpen for the Rebels, but he’s not getting warm right now.

Irwin is at 99 pitches, 4 hits, 6 strikeouts, 1 walk.

Top of the order coming up for Bama in the eighth.

    Ole Miss 5-2

    — PA

  14. djrebel Says:

    Bott 7
Basham opens with a sharp single, but Henry lines to second and doubles up Basham. Kilcrease faces the minimum.

Top of the order coming up for Bama.

    Ole Miss 5-2

    — PA

  15. djrebel Says:

    Top 8
Irwin goes 3-2 to Dugas and gives up a single up the middle. He’s leaving to a nice round of a applause now. New pitcher for Ole Miss is Jake Morgan. He ought to be fresh, just threw two pitches last night.

Like Pomeranz last night, Morgan cannot lose the game, will be a winner or a no-decision.

Morgan starts with 2-hole hitter Rutledge and a man on first.

    — PA

  16. djrebel Says:

    Top 8
Nice piece of a relief work from Morgan. He gives up a single, then goes 3-0 to Wilson before rallying to get the strikeout. Matthes comes up and looks at three strikes, didn’t swing at any, goes down on three pitches. Morgan goes to 3-2 on May and gets a strikeout.

All three were called third strikes.

    Ole Miss 5-2

    — PA

  17. djrebel Says:

    Bott 8
Rebels go in order. Morgan’s coming out for the top of the 9th to face the 6-8 hitters first.

    Ole Miss 5-2

Great win today with excellent pitching. It would be huge if we can get the sweep tomorrow.

Was Morgan on or what?? WOW.

  21. JB Says:

I have got to be ashame of myself, I have consider the Rebels not with the “right stuff”, but they have showed this old outlaw Josey Wales that they do have the right stuff and took it to those “red legs” today and last evening. GO REBELS!!!!

Hay Ripley, hope you and all having a good week-end.

  22. m4rebs Says:

Great game today guys. I was worried for a while, but that one inning proved to be all we needed. Don’t get carried away just yet JB, it’s still way too early for judgement on this team.

  23. ripleyreb Says:

Thanks JB, real good week-end, so far—Thanks to the Rebs.
