The school has confirmed the hiring of Houston Nutt, which we first reported last night. The confirmation was emailed in a media advisory about a half hour ago.

Scruggs plane did not go to Jackson, it went to Ark. Nutt and his agent were picked up last night and flown to Oxford. They spent until the wee hours hashing out the deal with Scruggs, Boone, Khyat, and a few other notable alum. Nutt spent the night at the home of Scruggs where he had eggs, wheat toast, and bacon for breakfast. Nutt wants to keep Freeze but is undecided about Thompson. A host of rebels are reported to be leaving the program. Some recruits that have commited are opening up their options again. Nutt will recieve 9.5 mil over four years with incentives for winning and bowl appearances. On another note Sylvester Croom will be undergoing test for a heart problem as early as tomorrow. Dr’s have told Croom he must quit eating all that State pork that is raised in Pontotoc. “Three pounds of bacon everyday, two double cheeseburgers for lunch, and a quart of colt 45 every night is just too much on a mans heart” said former coach Jackie Sherill.

I’m thinking that Petey knew he was gonna get Nutt and was hoping that Ogreron would do something to seal his fate. Their are gonna be seemed peeved off rednecks in Arky when you guys visit next year!

PA – are you hearing anything about PB and/or RK resigning toward the end of the year? I hear that PB is resigning and Thompson will become the new AD. Also hearing that RK resigns and Lott becomes the new chancellor.
November 27, 2007 at 12:09 pm |
If what I read here can be believed, the fact that Thompson’s fate is still up in the air leads me to believe Reggie Herring may be our next DC. I hope so. I also would like to see Tracy Rocker as our d-line coach.

WE MAY LOSE SOME PLAYERS OR RECRUITS BUT WILL GAIN SOME RECRUITS ALSO. NUTT IS THE MAN!
November 27, 2007 at 12:42 pm |
Next year when we beat Mississippi again, wont be “croomed”, it will be “nutted”.
November 27, 2007 at 12:51 pm |
Nutt is a good coach, but for the most part his teams have just been middle-of-the-pack in the SEC. What about recruiting? The University of Arkansas is the only school in that state. Now he has to recruit in state with MSU and USM. Not to mention that he’ll probably have more recruiting pressure from Alabama that he didn’t have in Arkansas. But he should get things turned around. He can’t do any worse than O
I liked Nutt while he was at Arkansas, but now I DESPISE him!!!
November 27, 2007 at 12:56 pm |
PA, I would also like to thank and commend you on a job well done that went above and beyond your job as a writer and jounalist. You didn’t have to keep us informed and up to date on this blog, but you did, and for that, you deserve all the credit in the world. You have made all of us Rebel fans very happy with what you did the past couple of days. Thank you!

Mad Dawg, nevermind not even worth commenting.

Thanks m4rebs,you took the words out of my mouth.
November 27, 2007 at 2:31 pm |
I think he will fit right in, I understand he knows how to bail players out of jail on game day. which considering rebels recent history might be a good thing.
November 27, 2007 at 2:36 pm |
How’s that baskeball season coming along for ya mad dawg?
November 27, 2007 at 2:38 pm |
Thanks OR. I appreciate your support. Just don’t fire me in a month (Ha). Kidding of course. I do appreciate you guys.

November 27, 2007 at 3:29 pm |
Wonder if Nutt will rip off his shirt tomorrow? That might not be pretty. I bet there would be a few of the guys on the team take him to the shed if he pulls an O on the first day. He might pull a U’y and head back to R-Kansas (per Les).
November 27, 2007 at 4:13 pm |
mad dawg you must be from moo u because you can’t even spell steal !
November 27, 2007 at 4:39 pm |
Judging from all of the dog “feedback”, these pups scared of the Nutt. He will continue the tradition of dog-whupping from Oxford.
Be afraid… be very afraid…
The Rebs are getting more press than the dogs these days.
Also, I would like to echo what everyone else has said:
Great Job PA!
November 27, 2007 at 4:40 pm |
Hey Mad Dawg, how about this…
Keith Mills / burg. & forgery
Titus Brown / assault
De’mon Glanton / assault
Adron Chambers / simple assault & INDECENT EXPOSURE
Anthony Summers / Disorderly conduct & running from scene
Charles Burns / assault
Derek Pegues / assault
Keith Fitzhugh / assault
Michael Gates / assault
Quinton Wesley / assault
Tray Rutland / assault
Michael Heard / assault & had to be subdued with a stun gun
Josh Riddell / DUI – never missed a practice and reinstated after one game
…you don’t really want to be calling out ANY school’s players, bucko. LOLOLOLOLOLOL
November 27, 2007 at 4:46 pm |
Wow, the Rebs got press today because you hired a new coach. Come Sunday when our bowl is announced, the only football anyone will care to talk about until February will be Bulldog football. Still not scared of Nutt, he has the same uninspired group of thieves and misfits Uh O had.
November 27, 2007 at 4:47 pm |
Shouldn’t you change your post from these days to this day giant?

November 27, 2007 at 5:31 pm |
Hey farley,
“the only football anyone will care to talk about until February will be Bulldog football.” News flash: Surely no one cares but the bulldog faithful. I’m sure the recruits will be impressed!
Anyway… Which bowl is your preferred bowl, Farley? I hear a lot of talk about the liberty bowl, but seems to me the music or indy would be better The liberty bowl stadium is kinda antique.
November 27, 2007 at 5:58 pm |
Thanks to PA for all his work on this story. I have been an OM fan for years, and I think Houston Nutt is a great hire for the OM program. We needed a head coach (not OC or DC) who is familiar with the SEC & can win in the SEC and I think Nutt is that man. He finds ways to win games and he always has his players ready to play and that’s what we need!
Welcome to the OLE MISS FAMILY COACH NUTT and HOTTY TODDY!
November 27, 2007 at 6:00 pm |
I think UM & MSU will become power teams that BAMA, Auburn, TN, and that college in Lousisana will have to deal with.
Feel things are going to start turning around for both teams.
In case u are wondering, I am for any team that plays those other SEC teams. It’s our turn to be contenders.
November 27, 2007 at 6:22 pm |
let me see, Cut then Olie Ban now Nutt, mmmh you right thats scary. I can see all the webel sorority houses will have to be padlocked.

I knew you liked scooping the rest of the state … but jeeeeeez!
Give the lowly boyz some notice down in Jackson, eh?!

November 27, 2007 at 10:22 pm |
We are getting taking to the shed by the ESPN guys. They act like we fired Orgeron too fast and think we Ole Miss folks think more of our program than we should. I guess we should just let the rest of the SEC and BCS non-conference schools just beat the crap out of us year after year after year and sit back and drink G&T’s and smoke cigar’s in their opinion. They brought up the Cutcliffe firing but don’t mention any details around the direction of the program and his insubordination prior to his departure. Anyway, I think everyone knows how I feel about Cutcliffe. I’m just amazed that ANYONE could criticize the firing of Coach O. Only people that haven’t endured that AWFUL HEAD COACHING decisions game after game after game over the last 3 seasons would feel the way they do. The only time the National media watches us, we have performed well for the most part, however, the bonehead calls were evident throughout those games too. They look at us as a small school playing in a conference that we shouldn’t be playing in and see us play UF in a 3 pt game, LSU in a 14 pt game, beating ALA but having it stolen from us and saying, why are these people upset with this guy? It’s not that we lose, it’s how we’ve lost over the last 3 years. There are game after game after game in the last 3 seasons that if another semi-seasoned Head Coach is at the helm, we win. I just don’t know what the national media expected. I know they made comments about us not interviewing a more diverse group of coaches, and they are probably right. We should have interviewed an equal number of candidates from each gender, ethnicity, reptiles, insects, and amphibians. After that 3 year interviewing process, we may have figured out we should have hired Houston Nutt the day after he resigned at Arkansas and is making $4M/yr at LSU. I just always think you are going to have mudslinging from some aspect…you can’t please everyone, and that’s the bottomline.
November 27, 2007 at 10:23 pm |
Sorry that last one was so long, but, quickly, the B’ham sportstalk today brought up a question and I’ll see if we can get some feedback from some Reb & Dawgs…Was Ed Orgeron the worst hire in the history of the SEC? They said top 5 FOR SURE. What do you guys (& gals) think?
November 27, 2007 at 10:43 pm |
m4, I pictured you as a minister preaching to a church full of lost, sinful men, pleading for them to come to Jesus after reading that post. LOL, good stuff, and I agree 100%. Everyone thinks that we “little” schools should sit back and be happy to watch our program “develop” by putting up with several losing seasons in a row. But when a “big” school decides to axe a coach after not performing in 3 seasons, it’s totally OK b/c big time programs don’t put up with losing. It’s all BS and those idiots at ESPN don’t know their behinds from a hole in the ground.
It’s their job to gripe and complain about something, that’s all they get paid to do. It’s not personal, it’s just business for them. And for that, you can just say to heck with’em, their opinion is a moo point. I’ll take what PA and Gregg say anyday over what those clowns in the national media say.
November 27, 2007 at 10:49 pm |
I agree. Brother Bill Oliver said all of your same points on the radio in Birmingham today. He says the media is starving to dig and dig and write and write, because, hey, let’s face it, that’s what they are getting paid to do, right? They aren’t getting paid to have intelligent conversations on their blogs all day.
November 28, 2007 at 1:06 am |
jeff bower would have been better.
November 28, 2007 at 1:21 am |
m4, im only 26 but i cannot think of a worse coach than orgeron. i cant really say whether or not bower would be better, but when the resigned i thought he may come to oxford. nutt has proven himself in the sec, but he has been recruiting in ark where there is only one division 1 school. lets see how he does against two other in state teams.
November 28, 2007 at 2:38 am |
He’ll do just fine here, and he should recruit well within AR for the next few years for us also. In most instances, better in-state athletes are drawn to Ole Miss just b/c it’s Ole Miss, that’s just the way it is and has been, regardless of the coach. That’s not a shot at anyone either, it’s just the truth.
November 28, 2007 at 10:18 am |
He guys, I’ve been consumed locally and when I’ve had a minute I haven’t been watching the national guys. Has there been an Ed sighting of late? I heard his name thrown out in connection with the Washington State job.
I can’t imagine him getting a major head coaching job right now, but this is college football and people do strange things, like fire Jeff Bower.
Matt, your post is right on above. The national media form opinions based on what they see in a program, which is often a small part of that program.

November 28, 2007 at 11:05 am |
Thanks PA. What do you think about my question about Ed being the WORST hire in SEC history, per the Bham Radio Jocks????
November 28, 2007 at 11:06 am |
Guess you didn’t get to ask my grade question. I think Mr. Boone has answered it for me/us. I wonder if he thinks he deserved longer or if he realized he was in over his head? I’d like to ask him that, then run.
November 28, 2007 at 11:10 am |
I don’t think Orgeron was the worse hire. He worked his tail off. I don’t know if there was a hard worker as Ed Orgeron was in the nation. No one can say that he did not make his best effort. However, his best was not good enough.
I have been a Rebel for many years, but could not bare to sit through another season like we have had for four years.
The one thing I can say is that our team never seemed to give up. It was just the boneheaded calls that lost us most of the games. I think Ed will be great as a DC and/or recruiter. And one day, he might be a great HC–the time was just not now.
November 28, 2007 at 5:30 pm |
Well put winnerzone.
November 29, 2007 at 2:42 pm |
Oxford Rebel,
Just so you know, for some time now the better in state athletes have gone to LSU, ALA, AUB and others just because they are LSU, ALA and AUB. To the SEC Ole Miss is what it is or ever will be. Mediocre. Rebel fans Seem to think they are more than they are. Yes, I am a state fan and am realistic about our program. Either of us should expect no more than an average of 8 wins a year with a 10 win year on occasion with a respectable bowl. To think or expect anything more is unrealistic.
