Here’s an excerpt from a Tuesday interview with Jerrell Powe. Following his unusual path to the playing field, we’re starting to see more of Powe’s engaging personality. His coaches say he doesn’t mind working hard and genuinely enjoys where he is. More on Powe’s progress and development in Thursday’s print edition.

Jerrell Powe weighed 387 pounds when he first shook hands with Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt. Powe is down to 340 now. Nutt would like to see him at 325, a weight the big defensive lineman hasn’t seen since the 11th grade.
“I guess I would be more swift on my feet at 325. Losing weight is definitely something I’ve got to work on, but it’s hard when they feed us the way they feed us. After a practice like this, I ain’t turning down no catfish,” Powe said.

Powe is my man, catfish and hush puppies. I believe that Gator offensive team will feel the presence of young Powe this week-end.

That catfish place in Abbeville still there?
September 24, 2008 at 6:35 pm |
No idea. The catfish place at Farley’s is.

We had the last of grouper tonight which we caught on our fishing trip back in June. Also had hush puppies. Don’t know what type hush puppie mix you use, we use House-Autry w/onion. Its very good. Fish, Zatarains and House-Autry, we find both are very good fish-fry.
PA, sorry about taking up your space discussing fish and hush puppies. Fish is a sport if able to catch one.

Got these frozen jalapeno ones from Kroger. Best ones I’ve ever eaten.

Yep. I’m outraged. Can’t believe he went that far. What a vulgar display.

No harm intended JB. That picture was of an art gallery on tattoos. One mans art=another mans porn I guess. Sorry old buddy.
September 24, 2008 at 8:46 pm |
No harm intended!!! This is a disgraceful and shameful act.
WordPress.com Please look into this.

Once again JB, sorry. All I can do is apologize. If you choose not to accept it, that’s your right. Would hate for something as miniscule as this to get in the way of the dialog we have created.

Back to the catfish (Please!!!)….Taylor Grocery in Taylor, MS: Best dang catfish (order it whole…none of that filet BS) in the world. Slaw, FF, with rotel cheese on the side (dump that stuff on your fries immediately!!!). Next, go outside and grab another budweiser from the trunk of your car/bed of your truck. Listen to some good ol’ boy playing the guitar for tips for an hour or so, and hang out with your friends out on the front porch. Go pay your tab (never more than $10). Good times. I love NC, but that’s one thing I miss about Oxford, MS.

I ate at Taylor Grocery once, and won’t be back. I did get fillets, but I don’t get whole fish, anywhere. It was decent, but not good enough to pay jacked up prices, fight a huge crowd, and listen to a crappy musician whose mic goes in and out. Maybe I just had a single bad experience, but it was not what everyone built it up to be.
And if you want good hushpuppies, there are 2 places in North MS that have the absolute best. “Cravin’ Catfish” in Sherman (not for you farley, it’s buffet only) and “The Country Square” just north of Amory on HWY 371. I’ve eat at literally dozens of catfish joints, and those are definetly the best hands down.
And JB, me and my wife drove out to Abbeville to eat at that catfish place you’re talking about, all we heard were good things, but when we got there, the doors were shut for good. This was around a year ago, and I don’t know if anyone has bought it out since then.
AND, when I read what Powe said, I laughed out loud. I bet he’s a hoot.

I like Comer’s Restaraunt in the Dorsey community outside of Fulton for my catfish needs. I still want to go to Taylor Grocery though just to give it a try.
September 25, 2008 at 4:43 am |
PA, we do have catfish up here but they can’t seem to get the hushpuppies right. Maybe it’s the lack of beer and pickup trucks!!!
September 25, 2008 at 5:41 am |
va, you could prolly find those same hushpuppies they sell in the freezer section at wal-mar.
September 25, 2008 at 7:58 am |
Draws….you’re probably right! I do miss the Mississippi “fish houses” though. Taylor’s grocery is pretty good, but there are so many scattered throughout Mississippi you just can hardly go wrong with any of them.

Never ate at that one. As a life-long Tupelo resident, I’ve gotta go with Malone’s.

The Country Gentleman in Fulton is really good too.

Always liked Rubens in Columbus. Right there on the river. Knew a guy who went to eat there and choked to death on a hush puppy of all things.

This is making me hungry. Can’t wait to dig into my can of tamales at lunch here in a minute.
