I’ve been following the Birmingham News story of Auburn’s interest in Houston Nutt while trying to do some Christmas shopping today.
I’ve spoken with two different people around the Auburn search. There seem to be varying levels of interest in Nutt, but that interest appears genuine.
The Birmingham News earlier today followed up its original story with a report that says Mike Leach of Texas Tech and Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp both are no longer candidates at Auburn.
Nutt responded to a text message a minute ago. I asked if he or his agent, Jimmy Sexton, had been contacted by Auburn. His one-word answer was “No.”
The possibility exists that Sexton has had some contact that Nutt doesn’t know about.
Nutt, athletics director Pete Boone and chancellor Robert Khayat met for about an hour this morning.
A restructured contract and raise for Nutt is in the works. Boone said he wants to get it done quickly. “The sooner the better, especially with all this stuff going on,” he said.

Not again…….?

This speculation is starting to scare me a little. If Leach withdraws his name from Auburn consideration then I will really be worried….

according to the bham paper nutt is the top man and leach has removed his name.

That’s not good….If Nutt goes…..Boone should pack his bags at the same time.

OMG NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO….UofM is about to have to come up with the big bucks I think….

Kent Austin for HC

Nutt means big bucks – one way or the other. If he stays any salary increase will be offset to some extent by increased enrollment and increased season ticket sales. If he goes tickets and enrollemnt will be hit and the cost of a coach will be unknown. Ole Miss cannot afford for Nutt to go to Auburn – the publicity will be incredibly negative even with Kent Austin waiting in the wings.

I don’t care much for Boone, but I don’t think he’s going to let us lose our head coach to Auburn twice within 10 years (he wasn’t responsible for us losing Tubby). Nutt will probably get a big raise out of this though through negotiations. Who would want to go to Auburn right now, when Alabama is on top? Good chance is they’d be fired after three or four years if they couldn’t produce.

Just heard reported that Nutt turned Auburn down….but I also heard the same thing before TT left us….
December 5, 2008 at 2:53 pm |
Where did you hear that Pontotoc Rebel?
December 5, 2008 at 2:56 pm |
There probably wouldn’t be contact between Nutt/ Sexton and Auburn. There probably IS contact between Nutt/ Sexton and Auburns search firm.
Symantics people… the media gave Nutt the open lane on this one.

Jackson paper website had it this morning along with Birmingham news.

Sorry jeff, read that wrong.
December 5, 2008 at 3:01 pm |
Accroding to WJOX radio in Birmingham Nutt truned down the first overtures but discussions continue because he hates Pete Boone.
December 5, 2008 at 3:04 pm |
Read it on Birminham News….don’t how much credit to give it though….
December 5, 2008 at 3:15 pm |
LMAO
December 5, 2008 at 3:23 pm |
Cr,
That’s right…apparently there are even bigger problems between Nutt and Boone than I first thought….
December 5, 2008 at 3:43 pm |
Looks like Nutt just got a raise.
December 5, 2008 at 3:51 pm |
reb in Bham… no Houston Nutt for HC. He is our coach and will continue to be. I am confident that he will stay. If I was a multi-millionaire Rebel alum, I would have called either Pete Boone or coach Nutt this morning and told them on the spot I would pay for whatever pay raise he needs to be able to stay.

The situation at Oxford should be democratic. Put a ballot on the Ole Miss Sports website and let the boosters and ticket holders vote for who stays – Pete Boone or Houston Nutt. Ole Miss would be a much better place without Pete Boone. He is like the AL DAVIS of SEC Football. Maybe if we can keep Nutt, he could be our AD one day. Delta Rebel

Apparently they are working on the new contract. PA has a story that says Nutt is going to get 2+million.

You’d be in jail for trying to bribe a judge. Sorry, couldn’t pass that one up.
December 5, 2008 at 4:03 pm |
PA said that his new contract is reportedly worth 2.85 million! we seem to be out of the woods now! Hotty Toddy!
December 5, 2008 at 4:05 pm |
That’s alot of money for one winning season. See how well that worked out for us.
December 5, 2008 at 4:10 pm |
they deserve it, how many are you excited about rebel football, and rev nutt in the house…Pay the man
December 5, 2008 at 4:22 pm |
Thank goodness…..the scare is over…..I think…is the ink dry yet?
The money is getting out of hand. But if we’re going to stay in the SEC, we have to pay it. I just hate to see ticket prices go up again.
It is getting to the point where a lot of families can’t afford to go to a game. That is sad.
A fellow Rebel and I were talking a few minutes ago. We live on the coast. With three kids, it costs him over $5oo to take his family to a game. He has to get hotel rooms, gas, food, and tickets…..not to mention refreshments for the kids at the game.
December 5, 2008 at 4:40 pm |
I do not see myself ever paying $500 for an Ole Miss game.
December 5, 2008 at 4:54 pm |
I don’t know where you live Chad. But if you live as far away as I do and you take kids to the game, you will pay that much if you go to a game.
Course, you could take a tent, eat sardines and crackers, wait around and hope to pay half price for a ticket on the street just before the game, and don’t buy the kids a drink in the Vaught when they beg for one and probably get by for less.
Five years ago, my son and I went to the Cotton Bowl. I bought 2 tickets to the Cotton Bowl, 2 $35 passes on a chartered bus out of Madison, 1 case of Bud, snacks, and ice for the bus ride, gas from Mobile to Madison and back, 2 meals at a casino in Shreveport on the way home, a program, and a souvenier sweat shirt for my wife who didn’t make the trip….total cost…$500.

Shame on you Draws; I believe that you are a “stirrer” bet you have a big smile on your face!!

I live very close to Ole Miss. I am just saying that it is not cool, as far as I am concerned, to pay $500 dollars for a football game I could watch for free on my TV.
