About 22 minutes to tip here. Teams have gone back in the dressing rooms. Terrico White was out just a minute go getting some stretching on that knee. Leave questions and comments here.

Perrin Crews of Tupelo High School is here with me tonight working on a senior project. One of his tasks is to talk to the three injured players — Eniel Polynice, Chris Warren and Trevor Gaskins — about how their rehabs are going.

Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy always said Gakins’ injury was the least severe of the three and that they could have gotten Gaskins ready to play late this season.

Gaskins just told Perrin he’s ready to go right now, but the decision has been made to proceed with caution and go ahead and use the redshirt season he has available.

  2. djrebel Says:

Graham, T White, M White, Holloway and Huertas are your Ole Miss starters tonight.

  3. djrebel Says:

Time out at 14:52. Back to back 3s by T White and Cranston, and Ole Miss leads 12-10. Tennessee has gotten some good baskets by Chism, the big guy. Tyler Smith hasn’t been a huge factor yet.

  4. djrebel Says:

Vols are active on the offensive glass too. Rebs lead 16-13.

  5. djrebel Says:

Time out at 11:41. Tied 18-18. Ole Miss is playing more man defense than I’ve seen it play lately. Tennessee isn’t getting easy looks but has some athletes and some depth. The Vols just tied the game on a 3 by freshman Cameron Tatum after a nice pass from inside the lane by Smith.

  6. djrebel Says:

“Hey, no second shots,” Bruce Pearl yells to his players.

  7. djrebel Says:

Rebels have held the Vols scoreless on 4 straight trips. Ole Miss 20-18.

  8. djrebel Says:

Time out Tennessee at 8:21. Rebels lead 22-18. Ole Miss just scored on a Holloway dunk with a great pass from Will Bogan. Ole Miss has held Tennessee scoreless on 5 straight trips and should have expanded the lead more than it is.

  9. djrebel Says:

Tabb just got past Bogan and scored on a drive in the lane plus a foul. He’ll be at the free throw line when play resumes. Rebels lead 24-23 at 6:34.

Ole Miss doesn’t appear to be going to the offensive glass as hard as it has in some recent games. I’m thinking there’s a lot of focus on getting back in transition defense against a team that can beat you down the floor.

  10. djrebel Says:

Huertas still hasn’t scored. Rebels trail 27-24.

  11. djrebel Says:

Time out at 3:30. Tennessee leads 29-27. Chism, the center, just fouled Terrico on a 3 attempt from the key. The Vols like to use size mismatches whenever they can, especially on in-bounds plays.

  12. djrebel Says:

Former coach Bob Weltlich is here tonight, sitting with All-Century team member John Stroud.

  13. djrebel Says:

Terrico just picked up his second foul and will sit the final 3:16. Vols at the line in a 29-29 game.

  14. djrebel Says:

Time out Ole Miss at 39.9. Rebels have the ball with 31 on the shot clock and a 34-32 lead.

  15. djrebel Says:

    Halftime Numbers:

Rebels shooting 48.1 percent to Vols 42.3

Ole Miss is leading despite only three points from Huertas, who is 1-for-4 from the floor.

Holloway is 5-for-6 for 10 points. Malcolm White hasn’t gotten off a shot.

Terrico White leads all scorers with 14 points on 4-for-7 shooting.

UT’s Tyler Smith, the No. 7 scorer in the SEC at 17.7 a game, has 8 points on 3-for-5 shooting.

Ole Miss has a 21-13 edge on the glass, just six offensive rebounds, not dominating that end like they did in the first half at LSU.

Vols are just 6-for-11, 54.5 percent, from the free throw line.

  16. djrebel Says:

Time out at 15:53. Huertas has hit a 3 and has two assists. Rebels have their biggest lead, 45-35. Tennessee is at the free throw line when play resumes.

  17. djrebel Says:

Rebels score five straight, play a little D and lead 50-35 after a Graham 3-ball. Vols call time at 14:37.

  18. Jay Stokes Says:

    rebs are playing great

  19. amsteffe Says:

i like huertas much more when he is slashing to the basket and looking to penetrate and dish and get his teammates involved, he’s much more effective that way rahter than one-on-one dribbling and forcing up a shot….that sounds so simple but that is the reality when watching huertas play…

  20. djrebel Says:

Vols on a 5-0 run. It’s 50-40. Rebels are spreading the floor on offense, and like at LSU, when they miss shots they’re not nearby to rebound.

  21. djrebel Says:

Time out at 11:51. Holloway just hit one of his awkward-looking jumpers. They look good going through the net. Rebels up 52-40.

  22. Jay Stokes Says:

PA, how ’bout murphy tonight? i think he’s headed for being a double-double guy every night.

  23. amsteffe Says:

Wow, right after I say that Huertas jacks up another 3 for an airball… Then goes to the sideline and yells back at Andy Kennedy for not passing the ball…He’s a much better slasher where he can get to the basket and get a close look or dish it to an open teammate…He can knock down the jumper if he is wide open but who does he think he is, Reggie Miller?

  24. amsteffe Says:

there it is huertas, stop roaming around the 3 point line all night and become a real playmaker

  25. djrebel Says:

Time out at 7:45. Ole Miss leads 63-49. The Rebels are spreading the floor and are converting on decent looks to keep the Vols at arm’s length. Tennessee has hurt the Rebels in the press a few times.

  26. djrebel Says:

    Rebels up 72-57 at 4:13.

  27. djrebel Says:

Time out at 2:59. Rebels up 74-60 with the ball.

  28. djrebel Says:

Jay, I’m beginning to get more confidence in Murphy driving to the goal. He’s looking less out of control, not all the way there, but he’s coming.

  29. asudduth Says:

I hope we can hold on to this game and get another win. I am very proud of this team!

  30. asudduth Says:

    a GREAT win!!

  31. djrebel Says:

    81-65 Ole Miss wins.

  32. flareb Says:

    PA,
Great win for Ole Miss. I’m proud of the way this team has hung
together and made themselves better. Bodes well for the future. Now the bad news……The SEC is weak. Can’t remember a stretch where this league has been so down. What has happened?

  33. m4rebs Says:

Good win Rebs. Tennessee can’t score with a pencil. They have zero outside threat and 1 guy that can score from the pure post. Amazing they’ve won as many as they have. The SEC is down, no doubt, however I will say this….the whole country is down. 2 key points contributing to this: Memphis is ranked #6 in the country, and they are absolutely terrible. They have won 51 straight conference games because no one is in their conference…..nobody. Number 2: The “2nd” best conference in America just had a game that the score ended up 38-33, and the team that had 33 is the 2nd place team, ranked in the top 25, in their own gym, against the 10th best team in their conference. 4th graders score more than 33 in a game, with 6 minute quarters. It just seems like from top to bottom, this year is a “Debbie Downer.” Then again, if everybody sucks, it will make for a competitive tourney come March.

  34. amsteffe Says:

    m4rebs…
The conference you are referring to is the Big Ten where the final score was 38-33. This conference prides themselves on defense and that has long been a Big Ten tradition. They have championships and final four runs to stand behind that. I don’t think we should attack everyone else because the SEC is down, let’s just keep rooting for the rebs.

By the way: The Big East may be the best conference ever assemebled in Bball this year, so it may not be a down year. Don’t be so negative.

  35. JB Says:

Those young Rebels are something to be admired. They are becoming awesome with the more playing experience they get. Experience some would not have gotten should injury not hit the top three starters. Now this young group of freshmen are playing with outstanding confidence and it is still building.

A word to Miss State, and in all kindness, your are in deep trouble, even with the win that you achieved last evening again the roosters from SC. Ole Miss is breathing down you neck. The Rebels stand to (if they continue to win) have got a great shot as #2 SEC West and a bye in the upcoming SEC Tournment. In this Ole Miss stand a very good chance of winning that tournment and off to NCAA play.

GO REBELS!!! I was very impressed with your play against the Tenn Vols.

  36. m4rebs Says:

Really amsteffe? I didn’t know what conference Penn State and Illinois were in, even though I specifically cited their rank within their conference, the location of the game in which it was played, and the score. Tradition my rear. Wisconsin, an early season “favorite” is reeling right now; Michigan has fallen flat on their face, and not one, but 2 teams in a game shot less than 15% from the floor. That is bad basketball, period. By the way, the Big East looks so good this year so you say, but the #2 team in that stellar league got handled by a BAD Tennessee team in Marquette. Providence, who never gets ANY credit, is sitting there #3 or #4 in the league, not even close to being ranked because they couldn’t beat anybody in the non conference. Georgetown, another Big East beast, has lost like 9 out of 10. You are going to have one of the best leagues when you have 20 teams in the league. It’s sheer numbers. By percentage, they have just as many tournament teams as the SEC will this year if you count NCAA and NIT berths. Face it, you just don’t have the historical powers spread across the board this season. UConn got out-physicalled the other night at the Hartford CC against Pitt, the only team in the Big East with a serious post player that can bang with the big guys. Blair threw that 7 foot dude around like a rag doll in the first 3 minutes and he wasn’t the same the rest of the game. An injury ridden Ole Miss team, with a less than 12 hour released from prison head coach, gave Louisville all they could handle in their own neighborhood. That same injury ridden Ole Miss team gave the game to WVU in the last 2 minutes at home, or this so called, best conference ever would have a real reality check on their resumes. Then again, if you don’t make your own opinions and let ESPN make them for you, you are right. College hoops are the best they’ve ever been and the Big East, the conference that CURRENTLY has the most games shown on ESPN, is the best league ever. Good call….you are exactly who ESPN is selling to. I’m not buying.
